Hey everyone. I've been working out for about 2 years now and was thinking of adding Creatine to my diet in addition to the protein shakes I usually take. However, I heard from people that Creatine causes hair loss. Has anyone here experienced this, or is it just a rumor?
I doubt this carries any truth, because creatine is created naturally in our bodies and we consume it regularly in meat as well.
Not sure about Creatine but I can say I've been working out regularly for decades and just eat regular food and enjoy my waist length hair.Can it be just that simple:)Cheers

Creatine ups your testosterone level which results in a higher level of Dihydrotestosterone, or DHT, which is known to cause hair loss. This is just what I've read though, here's my source...

excess shedding problem. I have been shedding too much for too long. Hopefully reducing this supplement will stop my hair from thinning. Up until reading this, I have been taking 1/2 to 2/3 of a scoop of this each day. I am going to decrease it to 1/5 to 1/4 of a scoop per day from this day forward.
I have been tweaking my supplements for the last 2 years, trying to figure out what is causing the problem. I have reduced these, all of which can cause increased shedding:
Vitamin A
Vitamin E
DHEA
I had no clue that creatine may have been the problem all along. By reducing this, I should have noticably thicker hair in less than a year. Thank you so much, this information may be a real blessing for me. I will know soon if this is working for me. I weigh all my recoverable shed hair, so I have feedback on just how much comes out. I estimate that about 80% is recoverable. This may seem a bit strange to some here. I actually keep a spreadsheet on hair shedding. The records go back several years.

I really echo your gratitude for all the information on this board and in the "On Being A Longhair" essay. There is no other place where you can find this information, at least none I have found. This board is a real treasure.

It is possible that fewer than 10 people in the entire country do this. I am obcessive / compulsive about growing it to maximum length. It must be the Aspewrger's and ADHD.
This board really is a treasure. I thought I knew it all regarding long hair but realize now that I don't know nearly as much as I thought. I have gotten valuable information here and met new friends too. (We have longhair meetups occasionally.) I am hoping that we have a San Francisco meetup this year.

Creatine if anything gives only a very small permanent benefit. (larger immediate but mostly temporary effects of having your muscles fuller with water) As well as being quite bad for your liver and kidneys if you aren't carefull, (by not drinking enough water, drinking alcohol or not cycling your creatine) and that would also be bad for your hair and the rest of you ofcourse.
Even though it's a bit of a hype to use creatine might as well go without it to achieve the same long term result and invest the money in quality food and proteine, and shampoo.
