Because we're all concerned with the destiny of the Earth, Happy Earth Day 2010!

Happy Earth day!
One thing everyone can do? Stop or reduce the use of those plastic grocery bags from the Supermarket. "But I recycle my bags one might say.
It takes energy and resources to manufacture the bag, it takes energy to transport the bag to the grocery store, Energy for the man to come in his big truck to pick up the recycled bags, and lastly energy and resources to recycle the bag into some other plastic ob ject that will eventually end up in a land fill.
If we could all just manage a tiny bit of discipline to take reusable bags even half the time when we go food shopping it would save ungodly amounts of energy, resources, and money. The money savings part could and most likely would be passed on to consumers.
As I work in the grocery biz I see tons of plastic bags coming and going all the time and it does make me think, what if.
That's my environmental message in commemoration of this 40th earth day.

10 KCal of crude oil to put only 1 KCal of food on the table. This includes the fuel for farming and transport. There is about 34,400 KCal in a gallon of crude oil. This will put only 3440 KCal of food on the table in the USA with our energy wasteful farming techniques.
Ride a bike?
Many think that riding a bike uses very little energy, but it requires a lot of extra food calories to provide the energy to pedal that bike. It is far less efficient than you would think. I ride athletically fast and burn through about 48 KCal per mile. 3440/48 = 71.7 miles per gallon of crude oil. (A less athletic rider would do better, perhaps as high as 200 miles per gallon, riding slowly, and on level terrain without wind.)
We must change our wasteful farming methods. Solar powered farming machines and organic farming will help for sure. If we don't, we will all starve when economically recoverable oil runs out.
Oh, I almost forgot, the plastic bags are used for lining my waste basket. I hope they don't stop making them.

The industry seems to be moving towards using corn based products for bio-degradable plastic alternatives. That's one reason you don't want to get modern packing peanuts wet - they dissolve into mush.

So I can use packing peanuts to make corn bread then. Now that's recycling!
Or a pair of Val's old knickers!
Thank God for our resident scientist/comedian for making me laugh out loud once again! While at the same time raising my awareness of my social responsibilities. Thank you, Scott - and don't go anywhere!
To minimize impact on the environment, you should ride your bike downhill.
Bill
In addition to that those of us with slightly full figured people would have to burn even more calories to pedal our big behinds all over creation. Granted it would be good for our health but the effects on the food supply........oh dear.
I like Bills idea of riding downhill.
LOL
I vow to spend the day "working" in the gardens...
and make a donation for the Schooner ADVENTURESS (school ship)
And to you and us all Vivien.
Yes I saw that on the Google main page this morning.
Still on the positive side, a bit of ash from Iceland cut the CO2 down for the last 6 days!
LOL, just don't go out and sweep up the ash debris into plastic bags!
Oh you don't have to worry we'll leave it on the doorstep of the Civil Aviation Authority, the just like to play it so SAFE!
