(The picture is me last year but my hair now is at that length since I had to regrow).
I tried to tie my hair up today.-not in public just at home- experimenting if you like.
I came accross a couple of problems though. First off- how should I tie it? I tried it parted in the middle, then pulling it from the sides into a tail- including the back, but the sides and bangs hardly went in so i put them behind my ears. I see people with theirs tied up, but without the parting- is this the best way to go?
Also, there are straggly/awkward hair underneath the wrap of the higher hair which make it look not too good, so I think I will get a slight undercut up the sides and back. TO do this, should I just ask for an inch shaved above the ears to front, and behind the ears and neck- one inch around the hairline? I think this is a good sized undercut- does this seem reasonable?
Anyway, I thought it looked not bad- still abit small but it was ok. Ina few months I should have a good sized tail.
I have one more confession- I may of seemed to be obssessed with Kurt Cobains hair on this board- but today I realised his hair was kept in the awkward stage as it is the same length as mine. So I am going for more of the length of Dave Grohl's (Nirvana drummer) when he had long hair as his looks v.good. I think he has a slight undercut in front of the ears, which also looks good, and a good tail can be made.

Maybe it's because you look just like him!
He//, get a guitar, learn to play two chords left handed (I could teach you in about 2 hours), and call the other two guys from Nirvana and reform the band!
It's not like you need to learn how to sing or anything!
I'm being harsh on Nirvana, because in allreality their music sucked (I'm a musician, so I know!). BUT...man, you look like a young Kurt! No $hit, man!
LOL! I play guitar in a band already!!!
Utero, Why do you keep thinking about taking scissors to you hair? The answer is, you don't cut anything. You will never get a decent tail unless you be patient and let it grow. At your length now, it's going to be at least 8 months before you can get a decent length and maybe a year or more before you can get all your hair in a ponytail. So be patient, don't cut it, don't trim it, don't go near scissors. I haven't had a trim in two and a half years, except for snipping off splie ends which I do myself. I will post a picture sometime in June, which will be 6 months since my last photo post.
Hey rokker you seem a sound guy- You got any hair advice for me as I asked in the previous post?
Cheers, James
I'm not Rokker, obviously, but with your hair, how it is, you probably just want to pull the hair up into a tail, since you don't have long enough bangs to pull it back/down for a low tail. You might discover that you like it that way, though, since, in time, you'll start to feel the end of the tail brush against the back of your neck when you move your head from side to side...

I think this was a very mature and classy response to a childish post.
Back to the topic, I think you should let your hair grow out. You have really nice hair, I'm sure it would look even better if it was longer. Besides, if you don't like it, you can always cut it look like Cobain or Grohl again. In the mean time, maybe searching through your hair and trimming any split ends every week or so would help your urge to cut it? It helps me, anyway.
if'n ya really wanna replicate cobain ya just gotta take up heroin & knock up courtney love.
I would say pull it straight back and then tie it near the nobby thing on the back of your head. As your hair gets longer u can tie it near the base of your neck (this would cover up an undercut). Slick it back with water to hold the loose hairs there till it dries (gel holds better but needs shampoo to wash out). Cut the hairs on your neck that won't grow long and just curls up-cutting anything that will eventually go into a hair tie just defeats the purpose of a ponytail!

Let me echo The Kid's advice: be careful about how much you cut! Trimming some of the smaller, slow-growing hairs "so that it looks nice" is a trap into which many, many of us have fallen at one time or another. If you get into a habit of cutting it whenever you need to look nice, you never let it grow out.
I don't know where you live (i.e., whether it soon will be so hot that you have to pull your back to be comfortable), but you might just consider wearing your hair down until it all (or substantially all) fits into the ponytail. If it's too hot, use bobby pins (aka hair pins) to keep the sides in place.
As for whether you should pull it straight back or part it, try them both, and see which one you like best and is most comfortable. Alternate styles day-by-day if you want.

Yes, 1" above ears and 1" behind ears sloping down. Under your pony
tail just cut the hair that never gets long, the short curly stuff.
But don't cut any more!
