hi people,
Been lurking in this forum since a week or 2, afraid to post my dilemma. Found the courage to make this post now though, so here goes:
My name is Remco, im 21 years of age and live in the Netherlands. Been growing my hair for about 3 and half years now, but i feel it's time for a change of looks. No way im cutting my hair though.
i have very thin, straight ginger hair. it's halfway past my backside, but im growing rather tired of the fact that it's so damn straight. I'd love to get some minor curvings in it and stuff, but i have no clue how i'd do that. Mind you, i'm not looking for perfect curly hair (which most likely isn't even possible with my hair) but just some minor curvings.
Sometimes i braid my hair in one big braid when i got to bed (sleeps easier in my opinion), and when i wake up i take it out. At that point my hair is a bit curly (if that's the right word, my english ain't perfect). I'd like to keep it that way permanently, but sadly, after i take my shower it's all straight again :(
Can anyone tell me how i get that curly look to it? or any other suggestions on changing hairstyles would be highly appreciated too.
kind regards,
Remco
Hi Remco. Here's something you can try. After you take a shower, partially dry your hair until it's damp. Then braid your hair and let it finish drying braided like that. That should make your hair a little wavy. Be careful braiding damp hair because wet hair is more susceptible to damage than dry hair.

We're in the same boat, man. Other than the braiding I con't think of anything else. Just be happy that our hair is easier to take care of (washing, brushing, etc.) than curly hair.
Peace,
Jarvis
Welcome!
I have a suggestion. Let's magically trade hair for a while - mine is curlier than you would ever want yours ;) and I think straight hair would be very refreshing, a nice break.
I believe you already have the idea sorted, of the braiding. If you want smaller curls try doing tighter braids but this takes more time and effort. The end result of braids doesn't come actually curly, it's just variations of wavy.
Salt water (after swimming in the sea) usually makes hair curlier than it is too, but the salt can dry out your hair. Just a suggestion as I live in a Mediterranean country but I don't know if swimming is possible for you in the Summer months.
Let us know if you manage to make your hair curly even for a short time :)

I comb my hair out wet and then brush it with a broad bristle brush once or twice before it's completely try in order to get it perfectly straight. If I just pat it dry and don't comb or brush it until it's completely dry, I have a bit of wave. The difference is like a less wavy version of Vincent and his sister a few posts down this page.
Hi Remco and welcome to the mlhh:)Well let me say from one straight haired guy to another just be proud of what you have as mine has been dead straight like forever.Well there was that one exception when I experimented with having it permed!Yikes, what a mistake that was but that was then and this is now and I love my dead straight mane:)Cheers

A fellow dutchie :)
There's not much you can do if you don't want to destroy your nice hiar.
You already know the braid trick, the other trick you can do is make a bun which will give your hair some waves as well.
To change your hair you will have to change styles, like braiding half tails and so on.
hi everyone,
Thank you for the suggestions. indeed the braiding trick might work, the problem is it takes too long to dry (and i dont have those hot air dryer things).
anywayz, thanks for all your replies. it made me realise i should indeed just be happy with the straight hair i have, and just find a new style that suits it, instead of trying to get some curls in.
If i do manage to get some curls in however, i'll be sure to upload a pic of it :)
kind regards,
Remco
One thing I love/hate about this board is how guys try to take a half-assed approach to hair styling. We want good looking long hair, but don't want to do all that "girly" stuff. I'll confess I've got a bag of velcro rollers I take out and use every few weeks for a different look and I think they work pretty well for me. Years ago I used to dry my hair by separating it into large sections, moussing it, twisting it, and winding into separate coils I pinned down with clips for a couple of hours. It gave a great natural curl sort of look.
An apparently little known secret is that many/most of the musicians you see with longer hair have styists that set their hair before performances. Hair setting for guys is sort of like sex for cats and fundamentalist Christians: They do it, but you can't catch them at it.
Oh, right on!!!!!! ;p Yeah, you've got it! That's true, we shouldn't be afraid to do things with it.
I've thought of using curlers, but don't have the time - and I remember doing that pincurl or little twists thing to my niece's hair and did she ever have awesomely big hair the next day!!!!!! Lol! I really want to do that pincurl one to myself sometime when I'm going out somewhere, like I never do these days!
Hi, Remco,
Braiding's the easiest method of introducing a wave to your hair, but there are other alternatives.
You could twist it up into a bun while it's still damp and that will also give you a slight wave.
My mother used curlers - perforated plastic cylinders - which she used to roll her wet hair round and fix with a pin. My sister uses a more modern equivalent which are sponge strips which have a central wire, like pipe cleaners. They take a long time to put in place and the hair takes quite a while to dry.
Good luck!
Braid (plait) you hair when it's wet from washing, and take it out when it's dry. You'll have some nice braid waves. My hair is also straight, when I braid it wet and take it out dry, it's like this:

Nice to meet you! When I saw the door & window in the background, I thought it must've been in Europe! I love the buildings of Europe!!! I was teaching myself some Nederlands some years ago too.
Your hair is nice, but I know what you mean. If I comb my hair when it's dry, it looks absolutely terrible!
I comb it in the tub, with a large tooth comb, with the shampoo in, from the bottom up, after combing with my fingers.
After I rinse it I comb it once more, then squeeze out the water by twisting it in a ponytail shape then clipping it up to dry myself. Then I take out the clip & lean forward to let my hair hang down & shake it a little, and it's all curly at that point - if I want more curl I can put my hands underneath it and push it up to my forhead a few times - it makes ringlets that way. Then I wrap it in the towel right away & keep it up for a few minutes. When I take it down it's nice and curly, and I suppose mousse applied before drying - in the tub - would help, but I don't bother.
I've been twisting it into a bun lately, and when I take it out it's REALLY curly - in a really trippy way, like something I've seen in pictures, but never knew how it was achieved.
Try those things! ;p I really want to see if it'll work for you! Let us know, ok?
Kindest regards,
John C
If you are brave enough I suggest a perm where you get a lot of spiral curls and with that wolume, it wouldf look really nice on you.
