My husband much to my pleasure is growing out his beautiful very thick straight hair. I'm enjoying this site and hope to get some tips on dealing with hair at the awkward stage. It just makes a high pony but the sides and front just hang down over his eyes ears driving him crazy. He's tried putting it behind his ears but it keeps coming forward. I've looked around and can't find many if any long hair on men with bangs...is it done? I'd appreciate any help you can render...He's considering cutting :(
About 20 years ago, I got bangs to go with my mid-back length hair. If you have hair parted in the middle, if you get the bangs cut too short or if they go straight across your forehead, you will look like a poodle. That's true for both men and women. Fortunately, the woman who cut my bangs was smarter than me. She moved my part about two inches to the side, cut the bangs long (as in lower than eyebrow-level) and swept the bangs almost entirely to the side that had the mass of hair. It looked fine.
Thanks for the response! I actually know a guy that did the bang thing with curly hair and I always said he looked like a poodle...so you're right on there.
He probably should just grow the bangs out until they're long enough to tuck behind the ears or even long enough for him to be able to tie his hair back with no problems. I made the mistake (2 years ago) of getting a trim which resulted in me having bangs whilst the sides and back were long. I didn't like it, but it looked kind of decent when I parted my hair from the center. It kind of blends in with the sides to make it feel long. Maybe he should do that.
I would suggest not cutting it, though. Bangs may look feminine, but some guys can make it work. Check out Iron Maiden's Bruce Dickinson. He used to have long hair with bangs.
Thanks for responding! I checked out Dickinson and see what you mean. Not sure I really like the look but of course it's his decision...I'm just getting options. I've see that some men have the hair around their ears cut short. Is that common and do hairdressers do it? My guy is blond and I found that trying to cut blond straight hair needs a professional.
Long bangs are easier once they are long because you can tuck them or put then in a tail. So in the long run it's worth it to grow them out. In the meanwhile use some gel or wear a cap or bandana.
Thanks for giving me some good ideas. My guy works in a professional environment as a software developer. Luckly Corporate gives people in this area a slight leeway with alternate looks, dress, etc. But somehow I don't think the bandana or cap will work there. I'm thinking that at work maybe gel is the answer since the consensus is that he should just hang in there and grow them out. Question...can guys use bobby pins to hold back the short sides like girls do or is that considered to feminine?
Bobby pins are much too girly for my taste, haha. But if his hair is dark he may be able hide them. It seems like gel would work best in his case.

I work in a "suit and tie" environment as well. I got through the awkward stage with the help of gell and mousse. I'd occasionally have some "hair products failure" but it was never a big deal.
Once I was able to put it into a tail I did that and threw away the gel.
Now it's half way down my back and I keep it in a bun at work. It's never an issue - most people have no idea how long it is any more. I use about 4 pins to "nail" the bun in place.
I keep a small can of heavy hold hair spray in my brief-case just in case I have to go to a meeting and worry about the "fly-away" strands. I think I've used it twice in the last year. I try to avoid it since I hate washing it out later.

Thanks Andrew for the suggestions. Everyone here has been very helpful with this and my husband said to say thanks...he's going to grow them out with the help of lots of gel. Thanks again and have a great day.
Why does your husband not come here and get advice at first hand: It would be far better if he set down his frustrations.
Kinda rude ain't it UK ?
This is a woman asking advice for her husband, maybe he don't even know she's here. Read that, "He's considering cutting :( " and she don't want him to.

Bangs are very practical, but they're pretty hard to pull off these days without looking a bit goofy whether you're a man or a woman. If you don't believe it, just load his picture into one of those free online hairstyle picking tools (always good for a laugh, anyway). Most of us with longer hair wear the front to at least chin length, I think. Long ago I used to sneak a bobbie pin or two in where they'd be hidden to keep the front back while it grew out and it worked reasonably well, but you do have to remember to adjust it from time to time during the day.
At any rate, if he grows them out, in a couple of months this will be a non-issue and I doubt either of you would consider bangs a good idea from that point.
We always love to hear that someone new is growing out his hair! Lol.
I say don't cut the bangs. He'll have to trim them every couple of months and that is going to be more annoying than just dealing with it for 2 or 3 more months. In the meantime, like Vincent said, use gel, a hat or bandanna.
Hope this helped.

I used to wear bangs and loved them. Sometimes I get in a mood that I'll consider cutting my hair into bangs again but the only thing stopping me is the knowledge it takes a long LONG time to grow them back out (I had the "former bangs" getting in my face constantly for about two years last time).
Instead of cutting, have him use hair spray to stick down the shorter hairs until they grow long enough to not be a bother.
