Hey guys,
Wow, it's probably been about 3 years since I've posted here; I started growing my hair out in late high school and just finished my 3rd year of college. You could say I've been coasting for a while; I reached my target length (between shoulders and mid-back, I find getting your hair caught between your back and a chair too annoying), stopped taking update pics, and have generally been avoiding the "actually styling it to fit your face" phase as I've been out of the "focus on getting enough length" phase for a while.
I'm finally getting around to changing this now because I got a really awesome internship in Hollywood this summer. It's a music industry thing so I think they'll be cool with the length overall (don't think they've seen me in person yet) but I want to look as professional as possible.
So my question is twofold:
1. As evidenced below, my hair gets these short frizzy bits all throughout it and no conditioner or anything I've tried seems to do a lot with them. How do you fix this?
and 2. In terms of actual styling what are the general rules for my type of face? Everytime I get a trim and they ask me if I want it layered or not I think I give a different answer because I can't remember what they did last time and honestly I can't tell what the difference looks like. What do you guys recommend? The internet has been less than helpful as most people consider something like David Spade-length "long"
Also any tips on making it look professional in general are appreciated. Thanks a lot!
Absolutely NO layering.
Conditioner and some hair spray should help keep it in place.
My wife has her hair layered "to give it shape". The bit problem I have with it is that she now can't put it up at all and can barely tie it back as she always has short bit sticking out all over.
She talked my daughter into doing the same thing and now my daughter is struggling to grow the layers out.

Sorry Ken - I couldn't resist - it's got dancing and cowboy hats ....
Cowboys Are Frequently Secretly Fond of Each Other
.
Hey Andrew,
That's fairly close to the reality of what it's actually like to be inside a gay C&W bar -- although everybody isn't necessarily as "Hollywood-handsome" as all of those studly-looking cowboys in that video (LOL)....
Also, the place I go dancing has more partner dancing (like 2-Step, Waltz, and Swing dancing), and less of the choreographed line dances; but hey, I shouldn't quibble (LOL)!
I forgot all about that particular Willie Nelson song -- a classic!
Thanks again for sharing that fun video!!

I just want to chime in and say that if you trust your hairdresser enough and are willing to take the risk, layering can look pretty cool.
In this vid I show my way of fixing this problem. Hope you have luck with it.
Best-

My advice is not to get layers. My own hair looked 1000% better when I grew all the layers out, and neater too, which was the point of your question. Ask for a 'blunt cut'. Stylists like to do layers because it is more 'creative' for them, but it makes long hair much harder to keep neat.
