This is my second time growing my hair out. First time I did it I dreaded my hair so that was that. This time I just want to grow it out. I've been growing it out for 10 months now (started at a short crew cut) just wondering when I should go to a salon to get it "shaped" or whatever.
Hi Ian,
Well good luck with growing you hair a second time so you should know the routine I'm sure. I would suggest you just let it grow for the time being and keep away from the salon. To me "shaping" sounds loss of hair.
Keep it growing and look forward to a update picture.
Cheers,

I didn't want to cut any so I backed off from the salon. I agree with the wait and see approach, I think it's coming along fine anyways. Thanks again.
Ian
the last time I had my hair "shaped" was back when mullets were in fashion. I'm so glad that I don't have to worry about the upkeep with the dreaded mullet anymore. In fact the last time I had any kind of trim was Aug. 1998, and I think my hair is shaped quite nicely now.

It will shape itself in time why not be like an explorer and just wait and see what happens. Some people want a certain shape in the back which is fine and their choice. Try letting it grow and see what it does then you can always shape it later.

I agree! You don't need to go to the stylist to get it shaped. The only reason to go is if you are unhappy with the way it looks, and would like to better balance it.
Stylists will do what they are paid to due: make you look handsome. They just require a tithe of your hair. :( If you go, you will look better, likely guaranteed. Just don't think that you need your hair to grow out balanced and always be stylish. It will be awkward, many times over, at least in my experience.
Just wait as long as you can, or forever. If you must go, pay good money -- no $10 strip mall hair cuts! Go to a nice salon, it's worth it!
Let us know how it goes....
You will get a lot of different replies, as peoples' views vary. My advice is to avoid salons and GROW, MAN, GROW.
Not for at least another two years. Growing your hair and scissors are not bed fallows.
