Hello there everyone, first time posting here. I've always had short hair (buzzed to an even length of "pretty darn close to bald"). Last fall it got to the point where I normally cut it and I just decided not to, and that I would try growing it long for a change.
Anyways, so I'm happily growing it along purely natural without any trims whatsoever but then I notice it looking very weird (because I started at even length all around) and so of course the bottom near my neck had a head start and the hair at the top is not caught up, my bangs were reaching the top of my nose and the hair in back was already down to my shoulders, but not the hair on the sides or top, so it looked very strange to me and I just cut it today without much thought.
I didn't cut ANY hair at ALL from the top or sides or anything, I just shortened the back part that was draping down the back of my neck, so that the rest would have more time to catch up (since the bottom near my neck had a headstart), I still plan on letting it grow from now on with no more trims until it gets long, I just did this as a one time thing to try and even it up a bit while I'm in the awkward phase. But as a first time grower, I'm just wondering, did I make a mistake by doing that, should I have let it all go natural from evenly-buzzed to long or is it okay to do a one-time trim at the back of my neck? At this point it looks more even in the mirror, even though the individual hairs are not all even now (because I cut the ones that grow out of top of my neck). I just used scissors btw, so there's still hair coming from the neck it's just shorter than it was.
My eventual goal would be Ozzy-ish in length and now I feel dumb for having done this, is it alright and should I just let it go or do I need to start over from an even length all-around again? Sorry for the long-winded post, it's late and I just feel stupid for having done this without asking about it first.
In fact I say keep trimming as it will keep it tidy.
At least a half inch to an inch a month.

It's not too bad of a thing, ideally you would have just left it alone, but as long as you don't trim it again it shouldn't be much of a problem.
Well everybody has his own preference, some people let it grow out untouched (like me) and some people keep it even (like Jason) while growing it out. Both styles look very good, not touching it gives a nice v-shape when long. Cutting it even gives a nice straight hair lenght. It's a matter of personal preference, I wanted maximum lenght so I didn't do anything although even lenght looks nice.
So it's only a bad idea if you think it is!
Now you've already trimmed it there is no choice left, so just let it grow from now on and enjoy it!
Thanks Vincent and others. I just feel like a dork for not toughing it out through all the awkward phases, considered buzzing to an even length again and starting over (would only be losing 8 months or so), but I might just say c'est la vie and let it keep growing in spite of my mistake. I guess it eventually would have needed a trim anyways (when it got too long for my liking).
So for now I'll just keep growing it, but don't worry, if I do decide to start over I won't keep it short, it'll be back to growing right away, no trims! Thanks for the responses and for having this cool forum here. Take care!
