While teasing one of my mangers to grow his hair out, I found out that there is this unspoken code that a manager in my organization should not have long hair.
I don't know why this upsets me or that I would even care as I would never want to be a manager in the first place. But still, it makes my blood boil.
Why is society so darn petty?
It's insane. I'd be annoyed too.
Built on a foundation of ntolerance and prejudice made America what it is today.
Hummmmm......

I have been a long hair all my life. even for that strech in the mid 90's when i went all shave head faux-rugged and butch-fuzzy i was still a long hair at heart. now its halfway down my back again. I was fortunate enough to have been born in 1964, so its always been "normal" for me. in the wisdom of my "lengthening" years i have found that many men bitterly resent long hair. there are many reasons for this, mostly its becuase long hair is the ULTIMATE COUNTER CULTURE EXPRESSION. it simultaneously implies rebel and royalty. it is ultimate "otherness". you just cant underestimate male pattern baldness as an eternal source of insecurity and resentment either.
The reason why society is so petty about this is explained in just one term SELF RIGHTEOUSNESS, which is very different then true righteousness.

You have to remember that you live and work right at the back door to Pat Robertson's Regent University and that he and his followers don't tolerate people who express their indiviudalism. It doesn't help here in Virginia that also you have a governor like Bob McDonnell. To add insult to injury, even technology guys who work in education are often forced to "abide" by the suggested guidelines for hair and personal appearance. Some of the technology support personnel in Virginia Beach do have long hair; however, I've never see a director or manager with long hair. And through my work with the electronic teacher programs here, I've met just about every techonology person in the system. Even as a teacher here in VA, one has to be careful about how he looks, etc.
