I was crusing the net to find some cool celtic hair ties and came across this! Wicked! A discussion board for long hair men! A couple of questions to yall who have had long hair for awhile: What is the best shampoo and conditioner to use? I use Pantene... Some pals of mine and I go swimming in a derelict pit mine and the water is of high minerial content. When my hair dries after a dip it is very VERY frizzy even after I wash. Any of yall have this problem? Any good advice?
Thank yall.
Tom
I have hair almost down to my belt line. This is the second time I've grown it long. I currently use Aussie shampoo once a week and wash with plain water the rest of the week. With longer hair, the oils your scalp produce take longer to reach the ends so they needs more time between washings to stabilize. Short hair needs more washing because the oils build up and have no place to go. Too much washing can strip the oils out of any hairstyle and cause frizziness.
Of course, everyone is different and you have to judge how often you need to shampoo and what brand works best for your hair type. The concensus on this board is to avoid shampoo that contains silicone derivitives (cones) or sulfates. Anything that leaves a waxy buildup is generally a bad idea too, which describes most conditioners.
I stopped using Pantene after I realized it dried out my hair and made it look really unhealthy looking.
Welcome to the board, Tom!
I am sure the alkalinity of the pit water is affecting your hair.
Hair likes it a little on the acidic side.
I have found finger-combing a few drops of Jojoba oil into my hair after it has partially dried after washing helpful in offsetting dryness and "frizzies".

Hi Tom,
First of all: Welcome to MLHH!
Secondly, as far as shampoo advise goes, I tend to prefer shampoos that places like Health Stores sell, like: EO (stands for "Essential OIl"), or Avalon Organics. You can get Avalon also at Whole Foods grocery stores, or even sometimes at Trader Joe's. It's a bit expensive; but worth it! I also love their conditioners, -- which the longer my hair has gotten, the more I go through (even moreso than shampoo)!
Also, similarly to what Oren said, I apply a small amount of oil onto my hair ends and lower half of my mane -- in my case, Olive Oil is my recent favorite beneficial oil; but also Kukui nut oil, Almond oil, or as Oren uses, Jojoba oil. All of those above-mentioned oils are beneficial to hair.
I also prefer applying any beneficial oil onto my hair whenever my hair is still damp, rather than dry -- usually right after having been freshly shampooed and conditioned.
Hope that help -- and again, welcome to the board!
