I wonder if anyone here uses cold water INSTEAD of conditioner.
Last year, when my hair was twice the lenght that it is now, i discovered that i could use cold water and not get any split ends.
I still use that method, and my ends are pretty good after 6 months without conditioner or trims. The only downside is that it doesn't make de-tangling any easier. That's not a problem for me now, though, since i rarely get any tangles at this stage, and my hair looks boring and flat when it's conditioned.
Cold water closes the little scales on the hair shaft, making it smoother. If you rinse in cold water before you apply conditioner and then rinse it out with cold water, your hair will be sleeker and easier to detangle.
I turn my hot water heater off for the summer months, as the "cold" water from the tap is somewhat warm - esp after a couple of weeks of consecutive 100+ deg F (38+ deg C) days.
I'm noticing too, that washing and rinsing with the cool water seems to reduce the occurrence of split ends. Maybe heat combined with chlorine accelerate the breakdown of hair at the ends.
