Just got back from the Haight Ashbury fair. As usual, it was awesome, crowded, and longhairs were to be seen here and there. Lots of hippie stuff for sale, and a perfect day, sunny and in the 70s.
Wish you were here!
Bill
Look carefully, and you'll see our very own Urban Cowboy, curator of fine roses and other flowering things, bought a FAKE FLOWER to put in his hair!
Well, it didn't wilt, which is what happens midway through the fair if you pick real ones.
Bill
Hi Bill,
Looks like a great day for all as the weather looks fantastic. As per Scott's post it also looks well attended by all sorts of people:)I would loved to have attended if I was still out west so I missed it by a month or so.Ken and yourself look great in that pic!Gotta have that longhair representation at the fair as I'm sure there were many more:)Thanks for posting those cool pics from the event Bill.Looking forward to catching up with you guys on my next trip out west.
Mark
LOL, that's the big advantage of buying a fake flower for your hair, Bill!
When I think about the lyrics from that old song '60s song, "... when you go to San Francisco, be sure to wear a flower in your hair...", the song never specified whether it had to be a REAL flower or not (LOL)....
It was fun hanging out with you & Larry yesterday, Bill -- and what a gorgeous day!!
Even though I brought my camera with me in my backpack, I ended up not taking any pics this year (unlike in '04, when I took a TON of longhair pics, walking up to total strangers and asking them if I could take their mug shots)... Oh, well. Maybe in a few days I should go back into my iphoto library and drag out the old '04 images. After all, since most longhairs are keen about recycling, why not recycle photos of old longhairs as well? (LOL)
Thanks for sharing this pic -- and also thank Larry for taking it! For a couple of old longhaired geezers, we don't look half-bad, do we? (Except for the one on the right. he could stand to lose a few thousand pounds or so - LOL)

If I can upload this recent pic of me (don't know if I can, because the title of the pic will say, "Unknown JPG"), you'll get to see a favorite rose of mine -- in this case, a REAL flower, rather than a fake one I bought at a street fair (LOL)....
The name of this rose is "Sally Holmes". This single-petalled beauty is a Hybrid Musk variety, but also sometimes referred to as a just a landscape or "shrub" rose -- and in California, can get to be a climber (often as tall as up to 12 or more feet)! The flower heads bloom in these huge clusters that from a distance can often look like a Rhododendron... And, unlike may of the much fussier Hybrid Tea roses, this rose has VERY healthy foliage!!
My friend and fellow gardener / landscaper, Jeong, took this pic a bit over a week ago. We were working together in this garden where I've pruned and cared for the client's roses for well over 10 years!
But, now back to the all-important question: Is there a rose in my hair, -- or, is there hair in my roses?
Hmmmm... Such mystery & intrigue... The plot thicken (LOL)!!

Ken, Beautiful!!! The flowers and the hair.
The lyric should be, "Be sure to wear some flowers around your hair".
peace. jonalbear
by the way, Hi to the ever elusive Even!
Thanks, jonalbear! Do you also happen to know the name of the guy who sings that song? I should know; but don't... I think he was one of those "one-hit wonders" -- heck, I don't even know the correct name of that song, either!
In any case, here's another pic of me with the Sally Holmes rose... Enjoy!!
- Ken
PS - Even was going to come with me to the Haight St. fair yesterday; but on our side of town it was much warmer (we live a few miles much further inland in SF, so don't always feel the cooling coastal fog like Haight St. can), -- so he bailed, thinking it would be too hot at the street fair. He's also not too fond of crowds, and much more of a "homebody" than I am, I guess: I keep nagging him to get out more! I'll let him know that you say hello -- and maybe we'll even get someone to take a pic of us soon!
"Ken + Sally = true love"
Me playing peek-a-boo behind the Sally Holmes rose -- the only girlfriend I'll ever have, and am still madly in love with (don't tell Even I'm fooling around behind his back - LOL).... This pic isn't so good at showing off my hair, though -- I forgot to toss it in front of my shoulder before Jeong snapped the pic!!
Hi Ken,
Those are some wonderful pictures of you, your hair, and the roses:)I need to hire you here to fix the mess in my backyard!LOL.It's the ultimate road trip though but summer can be fun here in Joisey!I'll be sure to drag you to the Joisey shore to a wonderful place known as Seaside Heights.I hope you'll be ready for that.He He.If your feeling lucky there is always Atlantic City.Eh, I don't know I'm starting to check my calender for another west coast trip.Late September looks kind of cool:)What do you think???????????
Mark
Hey Mark,
Weather-wise, late September is usually a wonderful time of year to visit the Bay Area and Northern CA, because the inland valleys have started to cool down a bit, as well as the cool coastal fog has finally lightened up and even warmed up a bit -- it's usually PERFECT around here then! Also, our winter rainy season doesn't usually start until late Oct. or even November; so, yes, come out West, Mark, for sure!
Looking forward to seeing you back out here again!
- Ken
Why yes I do know who sings that song. It is Scott Mackenzie. Believe the correct name of the song is. San Francisco (Be Sure to Wear Some Flowers in you Hair)
peace, jonalbear
But your hair looks really nice. ;)
-----------------------------------------------------
I was, but I could not find you or Ken. I walked the length of it 4 times. I also just stopped and waited in places, hoping you would walk by. There must have been 100,000 people there and finding you was like finding a needle in a haystack. I got there a bit after 3 PM due to traffic. It was horrible. I could have walked across town faster.
Scott
Cell phones would help =p, ring ring, bill where are you? over by the "x". Ok on my way.
Could always use smoke signals...
Worked for the Indians.
Too much interference on the channel at hippie events. Pot smoke.
And in the Haight, there's also San Francisco's God-given birthright. Fog.
Bill
I lived in Oxnard Ca from 1966-69.My mothers cousin took me to San Francisco the summer of 67,the Summer of Love.We did all the tourist stuff,Golden Gate, the Wharf. She also took me to Haight Ashbury.I'll never forget it.Bought a big bronze peace sign.Still have it somewhere. And was crazy about long hair.Still am.Then we moved back to Texas. That was a big change.
Arrick
Looks like good weather. The site of all those tourists makes me want to run away screaming....LOL
Interesting contrast to have Bill alone surrounded by Mr and Mrs. Suburbia and their 2.3 children.
All those who made The Haight famous would be rolling in their graves, or laughing hysterically, or tripping on acid.
