Hey, all!
I've been debating cutting all of my hair off for the last few days but I'm hopefully not going to do it, remembering how miserable I was the last time!
Some of you may remember me from a weeks back and a few of you guys requested a bigger photo. Well, here's a recent photo of me on the day of my sister's prom, about 2 weeks ago!
This is what my hair is like straight out of the shower once it's dry, with absolutely no product!
That is trully a magnificient mane of hair there and I would think many guys and girls would be envious of your beautiful well groomed hair. Please don't cut it as I think you would immediately regret it.
Curly hair is a pain in the awkward stages and it would be better to trim a little then cut it all off at once so if you don't like it 6 inches shorter then it won't take long to grow out again. Or better yet just keep it in a bun in the day time which makes you look like you have short hair when you don't. If you cut it all off now then you would have no choice.
My hair was similar to yours in texture and thickness 20 years ago - alas it's a lot less curly now and gone finer and not as thick.
Thanks for sharing.
Duncan
It looks amazing, don't cut it.

Your hair looks super. You mention how miserable you felt after cutting it last time. The best choice for you is: just don't cut it.

Hi there,
You certainly have an amazing head of hair there and it would be a shame if you cut it. A great inspiration there and I would keep growing it.
Cheers,
John.B
Great hair. It looks amazing, but I bet it can be a pain to brush/comb.
If you don't have to cut it, don't do it. As you said, you regretted it last time. There are lots of other stying options you could investigate.
Well, the reason I'm thinking of cutting is because I'm just tired of dealing with it. With hair like this it's alot of work keeping it good looking. It's not like you guys with straight hair, where you can just comb and forget it, I can't even comb mine full out because the curls separate and I look like a friggin wookie! I can only gently finger comb in the shower which takes ages, not to mention washing and conditioning.
When I first started growing, my goal was something like this..
(John Petrucci of Dream Theater, second from the right.)
Alas, as you can see, my hair definitely does not do that. Believe me, I've tried! :P
So, really, I'm just getting sick of all the work just to look good. :/
I've been trying the '1 Week Rule' where if you still have thoughts of cutting after a week, then go for it. Well it's been about 5 days and I don't know...
I just need a little push in the right direction for me, I guess.

I'm no expert on curly hair, but have you tried using any of the oils, such as jojoba or sweet almond? There are a number of good products for curly hair as well. Give them a try and see how you feel.
With hair as great as that, I would tend to want to "debate" as to cut or not for the next 6 months at least.
Hi Hemmelight,
You have a truly outstanding head of thick and healthy curls, and I hope you stick to your guns and keep it growing!
Keep it growing,
David
First of all, you have wonderful hair, so I hope you don't cut it.
There was a guy on this board who's handle I can't remember, but he had hair similar to yours, but much longer. He was a computer guy who worked for Intel, so maybe someone else will remember him. He had his own website, with some hair tips on it.
Your hair is absolutely fantastic and to even think about cutting it would be a tragedy before it actually happened. You are so fortunate to have such nice hair so what's the beef!Well I hope you do keep it but that's my opinion.Cheers and good luck.
Mark
Looks great man. Don't cut it!
Hello Hemmelight, I kind of understand your feeling about your type of hair, it's what I have also. At about 4yrs. growth now, your's looks abit thicker than mine, but I'm 54 yrs. and maybe that's to be expected. I too like wearing it down, but most of the time it's in a tail. Virgin Coconut oil or Olive oil have helped me out in keeping it less fuzzy and moist looking. I pour some on my brush and work it in. As for me, wavy/curly type hair always look better longer than short.
All the best to you!
Frank
Hi,
you have got an amazing mane.
My hair-type is similar to yours and even my care-routine WAS similar to yours (detangling the hair under the shower). But now I detangle it when dry, just by finger-combing. Getting out all the tangles can take ages...so you're not alone. ;)
I just couldn't afford wasting lots of water and energy anymore, so I chose to no more "abuse" the shower to have nice hair. But for some reason I got terrible hair-breakage since then, which is one of the reasons why I cut it back to shoulder-length and why I even think of starting over now...but maybe it was caused by a wrong shampoo, I have no idea.
Maybe try to get a routine that doesn't take longer than 30 minutes (yep, 30 minutes is even optimistic for this hair-type/lenghth...straight hair seems so much easier) a day? This would be a good start! And while taking care of the hair, think positive about it: You are doing something for yourself and it's not wasted time! You can even listen to music etc. while doing this...
If you like it this long, I recommend keeping it for sure, but even if you decide to go for a cut, I recommend rather trimming it first and waiting again.
Also don't wash it too often and use little shampoo, but that's probably no news to you.
You have a great head of curly hair that you can be proud of!
Good luck,
