A regular topic around here is looking appropriate for work but still having long hair.
I've been wearing mine in a bun at work - there are few people who've stayed past 5:00 to see it down. It's a non-issue now but did attract some notice as I was going through the akward stage. One of our salesmen also has long hair but he's got good profit numbers and as a company we tend to be pretty forgiving in those circumstances ;)
The owner of the company is very big on appearances and we have a corporate dress code.
Some pictures were taken at a company BBQ - I've blurred out other people's faces, but I think you'll agree that with my hair up - there's really nothing to comment on. With it down, it pretty much reaches my elbows.
In the picture on the left not only is there nothing to comment on, you can't even tell you have long hair!
You mention a corporate dress code. Does it mention hair?

It's actually a pretty sane policy from my point of view that just codifies the expectations. I've seen some places where they don't have a policy and you can't be sure if you're talking to a department head or some guy who walked in off the street.
One thing that makes us all laugh though is that there's even a section for home office workers - it seems that you can wear whatever you like there .
Well, if they were gonna include home-workers in there, at least they didn't try to regulate what they're wearing. What are they gonna do, drop by for snap inspections of the dress code? [grin]
Recently ended up working from home for a couple of weeks due to some health problems (was taking a madication I couldn't drive with). Was often getting my work done while wearing a t-shirt and my pajama bottoms... [grin]
Andrew, you look GREAT!!!!
In my opinion, nothing looks more dashing than a longhair in a suit & tie -- other than in a tux!
I wear my hair in a bun at work, too; but because I work in a kitchen, I also have to wear a hat or a hair-net (health code rules). Also whenever I have a gardening job, in most cases there, too, I usually also wear my hair in a bun because of practical reasons (I work in a lot of rose gardens mostly, and thorns have a way of snagging hair!)...
Great post -- thanks for sharing it!

Nice. I just got a job at K mart. They let me keep the hair and goatee. Not sure but I might be able to get away with letting it down. (the managers seem pretty laidback)
Well done on getting the job and the bonus and their dress policy as well.
Looking good. Is that a braided bun, I see?
I normally braid mine for work and sports, but occasionally wear a bun, although I can't really get it to stay in all day yet.
Nope - not braided. I don't have the energy for that in the morning. I just twist the hair into a "rope" and wrap that around.
To make it stay, I first use a hair tie in the centre of the back of my head for the starting pony tail. Then after I've wrapped the hair around the base a second tie holds it fairly well. In the last year or so I've also used 4 (one from each side) "ballet" bobbie pins - the U shaped ones - somewhat hard to find buy my local WalMart stocks them - to "thru-bolt" them in place. I don't try to pin the bun to the back of my head and the idea of just sticking the pins directly through the bun came from when I used to work with a mining company. We would drill into the rock face and sink long bolts to stabalize things. This is sort of the same idea and it seems to work for me.
Thanks for posting this. I'm in vet school and have been worrying about how people are going to react to my hair. Been growing it 10 months now, but by the time I get into clinics I should be able to tie it back. How much hair would you say you need to create the
"bun?"
How much hair would you say you need to create the
Just enough to twist it into some kind of coil.

I think I was wearing a bun by the end of the first year - so roughly shoulder length.
Usually I make the bun in the centre of the back of my head except if I'm visiting a site where I need to wear a hard-hat. Then I do it at the base of my head so that the hard-hat will sit properly and so that I don't violate the safety rules that state no hair more than 4" past the collar.
Hi Andrew,
Great pic of you and great example of how to manage longhair in a corporate environment.Who could possibly complain about how your hair is worn and I think its cool that you let you hair down after 5 if you are staying late at the office:)Way to go my friend!Cheers

I've even had the head of HR come by after 5:00 (much to her shock) but she had nothing to say in part I think because it was after hours. When the owner might be around I take extra care to make sure it stays up though - the dress code was his idea. He's never had anything to say to me directly or indirectly about my hair though any time we've encountered each other.
