So I have lately been thinking on what would be the best way to control flowing hair.
Due to a medical issue with all sorts of medicines my hair no matter how well I care for it seems to prone to hair breakage and my beard seems to be thinning to much for the same reasons.
I had been putting my hair back in a pony tail going from a elastic soft band without metal to a terry cloth band which is even softer. But I am still having breakage from it.
I would let it flow freely but I do not like it falling in my face.
So I have been contemplating on what else I could use to keep hair out of the face and not look to weird (i.e. headband around forehead) or look to girly.
Maybe nobody here knows, but I was also wondering what Medieval Man used to control their hair since shoulder length hair was the norm during that period and elastic was not yet invented. Perhaps they just let it flow freely but I can't seem to believe they would do that during fighting since hair in the eyes would be a problem.. :)
So anybody have any solutions to what I could use or answers to the above.. :)
1. Be sure you are using PLENTY of conditioner.
2. Use pins to hold hair in place.
Early man? I have absolutely no idea. Perhaps there is a primate out there who knows this answer?
Thanks for your answers...
I do use plenty of conditioner because of the brittleness and breakage.. I use pure coconut oil once a week and a organic conditioner rinse on other times... But they still break...
What kind of pins do you mean? bobby pins?
Yes..........and there are many varieties to choose from these days. Some almost impossible to detect.
I heard that hair sticks were used by both men and women in the ancient past. I use one - it's pretty gentle. The hair is twisted into a gentle coil, then the stick is sewn through it. Start at the top of one side, go down, up, down, then out the top of the other side. A sanded piece of chopstick works. I'm thinking of doing a small video of me putting it in soon.

Now this sounds very interesting... I would love to see a video of how it works...
Of course I am not sure if hair sticks work well with shoulder length hair?
Something else that was used in the Bronze age and by the Ancient Mediterranean peoples as a clothing clasp, and possibly a hair clasp was the simple ring and pin. You'd put the ring over the part of the hair you want to hold, then put the pin in the ring under the left side of the hair, under, and up the right side and out the other side of the ring.
