Hey guys, I've been a long hair for 10 years now....wow, I guess that's a huge milestone. The past year I ended up getting a undercut. I really liked it at first b/c the sides of my hair would stick out and break off when I had it tied back in a ponytail. I recently started working a security job mainly in a grocery store and I can't get over the negative comments from people. Younger kids and teens call me "mullet man" and say things like, "Business in the front, party in the back." I never thought having an undercut was a mullet, lol. A lady tonight said it looks like I'm wearing a wig over a shaved head b/c half of my head is shaved. I'd like to grow the sides and back that are shaved back but I don't know if it's possible. My hair is to my shoulder blades and I have to have it tied back for work. I thought about just cutting my hair short and growing it all over again. Is there a way to grow out an undercut without cutting all my hair off to even it out? Thanks in advance!
By all means you can grow out an undercut (which I happen to
have also). Whatever you do DO NOT cut off the long hair you
have now!! You will have to go through a mini awkward stage but
whenever you can wear your hair down the shorter hair below
won't show. So yeah I think that with a little patience you can
definitely grow out an undercut WITHOUT cutting the long hair
on top.
Or if you still like the undercut just blow off all the stupid
comments.
Think of it logically.
There is no way on earth that the shaven hair can catch up with the rest unless ithat is at terminal length and over 5 years it does even out - the 'long' hair will always have a 10" or whatever start.
All you can do, if you do maintenance trims every whenever, is to carry on and over time, the shaved hair will catch up and with those trims the difference in length will diminish over time.
There is no easy way, you can now repent at leisure from your decision to do an undercut in the first place.
Hi Carlos,
Since I've never had an undercut, any advise from me would probably be pointless -- other than to say just ignore the critical comments that you mentioned having to hear.
My guess is that I imagine, like MG or UK said below, that by keeping whatever portion of long hair on your head, you'll still have to go through a second "awkward phase" (although it might only be a "mini" awkward phase).
I always recommend that whenever possible, keeping long hair, rather than cutting it, to my way of thinking is in most cases the wiser and saner (and HAPPIER!) solution!

If you like the undercut, just iggy the bad comments. It all depends on what you like, not what everyone else likes. Enjoy your hair style! :)

If you like the undercut, then why change it? Who cares what others think? Having longhair, you will get stupid negative people saying stupid, negative comments anyway. I've had a "mini undercut" (about a inch above the ears is shaved) for about 5 years now and wouldnt cut it for anything. Or grow the undercut out either cause I like it. But to be honest I have NEVER gotten a negative comment about my hairstyle. Only positive compliments. Of course, being a scary looking 250 pound bodybuilder and martial artist with tattoos discourages too many negative comments. LOL :P But if you like it, dont change it at all. I'm sure your hair looks great as is.
