My hair is currently at about 1/2 inch past nipple length, or mid-back. The trouble is that the hairs in front of my ears/above the area where the hairs are normally short are shorter than they used to be, even though the rest of my hair is all about the same length. I'm just wondering what sort of things could be causing this, because they haven't always been so short.
Some theories I have are that it may have something to do with the way I sleep, because I tend to sleep with that area of my head on the pillow and that may damage those hairs, or maybe that I need to switch my shampoo/conditioner (I currently use Pantene).
It doesn't bother me too much in terms of appearance, but when I put my hair in a tail or anything these hairs stick out and must be tucked behind my ears. Since they are shorter than the rest they are also a bit curlier.
Any thoughts would help! I'll get a picture up once I have enough light.

Hi
About all I can guess at this point is that perhaps these hairs of which you speak are similar to the hairs found under the main hair-line. Those hairs are of a completely different texture and look as the normal "head Hair." They also tend to go nowhere. Just look unsightly.
Just trim those off if they bother you..........but, before you do a thing, please let us all see the photos first so as to be 100% sure.

Hi Justin,
I don't think I could trim these off, as it would definitely make my hair look much thinner in the front (which I wouldn't want). Anyway it may just be that since the rest of my hair has grown longer and these haven't it's just gotten to me.

Hey -Charlie M
All looks perfectly well to me and you have VERY NICE long hair! :-) I think it has just gotten to you and you are noticing something that many of us never would. Unless someone else sees something that I am not seeing, I wouldn't give it a worry. Glad you posted the pic. It was the most helpful of all.
Take care and with all best wishes-
Justin~
Hi Charlie M,
It's possible those shorter hairs may be the result of some breakage you've experienced when combing or brushing as that is not uncommon.I know some of my hairs up front are shorter like that due to breakage over time. They will eventually grow longer again but I wouldn't eliminate them just because they won't fit into you tail.Best to just tuck them back like you've been doing or use product to hold them.Hair looks great BTW:)Cheers
Mark

Be sure to let these grow. Everything looks normal to me. Hair growth rates can vary at different locations on your head. Your hair probably grows more slowly in the front and faster in the back.

My personal experience is leave it...
Your hairs still balancing out as it grows
It's often that it'll feel out of place but in my opinion Your hair is layered nicely and I appreciate the fact that it's not so typical
I found that when I shave, my razor can accidentally cut the hairs near my ears, specifically the hairs that tend to sit behind my ears and protrude down below and behind my lower jaw. It's hard to see this area and I don't shave very often, so I didn't notice this was happening for a long time.
Might not be what's happening in your case, but it's something to watch for.
Could be breakage from your ponytail band - it's easy to break a few hairs from time to time when taking off the band or tightening it. Those hairs are then exactly long enough not to tie in with the rest until they grow long enough again.
Most of us who wear ponytails a lot have a few; if there are lots, it may be better to be extra careful when untying and making sure the band isn't too tight.
Hey there Charlie,
I have areas above my ears that are shorter, which is rather annoying as after all the years I have been growing they have never gotten long enough to fit properly in a tail.
Also I find random shorter areas on top of my head too.
I'm sure its natural and we are all individuals, so don't worry too much.
cheers Dave
