Wow, what has happened ? This place used to be buzzing, I can log on once a month and still catch up in 30 seconds. Guys are definately lurking as was shown by Justin's Farewell Post, but hardly anybody is getting involved . . . mmmmm why is that I wonder . . .
My theory is many of the members here on MLHB live in the Northern Hemisphere. Maybe in Summertime people spend more time away from their computers and enjoying the great outdoors and holiday season. I expect activity will begin to pick up later in the year when you Northerners are doing your winter.
Duncan
Yes, I agree. It used to be that posts would slide off the screen after just 2 weeks. Now it's sometimes 2 months!
I'm just as guilty of lurking more than posting, but now that the busy season is over I should be able to be a bit more active.
Bruce
(good to hear from you Dave!)
There may be problem in the posting flow. I set up a post - following the rules - a couple of weeks ago, and it never appeared. Once that happens it tends to discourage further posting. I didn't think further about it until you brought the subject up now.
Hey Davieeee!
Well currently I'm on vacation in California so I'll only be on occasionally
when I get the chance to post but I totally agree the board activity has
dropped off dramatically from what it used to be.It's been said in the past the
bad economy had something to do with it but I'm not sure about that. However
Justin's thread did bring out the lurkers.Hopefully this is just a weird phase at
the moment and that things will pick up.Still it was awesome seeing your
name on the board again my friend:)Oh well back to my vacation;)Cheers buddy!
Mark
hey there Markie-babes, have yourself a greaaat vacation my friend :)))
Laters buddy, Dave
I thought you were on holiday...put the iPhone away!
Ha Ha,I know John guess I'm just an addict!LOL.Cheers
Mark
Speaking strictly for myself, I found that I reached the ultimate milestone after terminal length: the "it's all been said and done" milestone.
You see posts from fresh, young folks, with the same old questions. You don't feel guilty about ignoring them, because there are still enough enthusiastic people to answer their questions and/or support them.
It could also be that we are finally experiencing the end of the transient effect of the Internet coming into existance. Either that, or the "growin' it outs" have all migrated to... oh no... FaceBook. Sorry. Dirty word, but somebody had to say it.
I'm juuuust old enough to have no interest in FaceBook and think it's a sign of the Apocalypse, so I have no idea if there's a longhair affinity group there or not. Bloody shame if that's the reason, because you're trading a "PBS like" board for an invasive, overly complicated, proprietary system...
And there you see an encapsulation of why I don't post any more--my hair is just one dimension of my personality. It's been "workd out" in my life. I'm far more passionate now about things like technology, music, politics, etc.
Well perhaps the Apocalypse is coming and may end up in the facebook graveyard you never know!
Hi Steve, great to see you here again:)I tend to agree with your points in that I too am terminal in my hair growth,I feel, so in other words my journey is over. Also there is more to me than just being a longhair. However I'm still very passionate about my hair and love reading how other guys are doing in their own journeys. It's just fun to see how the newbies are coping and it's nice to give them advice and support when they most need it.But guys like us need more than that being we are longhair veterans, so I feel opening up the board to some off topic stuff is good.Within reason of course but its cool to learn what other interests the guys here have as we are a community of friends I like to think:)That's whats always made the mlhh appealing to me as it always isn't just about the hair.Anyway I just felt the urge to chime in from my vacation again as I'm glad nuttidave started this thread.Cheers Steve!
Mark
ps:I agree with you on Facebook,I really dislike it for some reason.I'd rather be here:)
I agree with you on facebook Steve, I really don't like it. You know I think it has a lot to do with people wanting their 15 minutes of fame, its the cult of celebrity. Folks seem to think that making a loaf of bread or putting their feet up with a cocoa is newsworthy and its just not, its bullshit. If you want to communicate, go and talk to someone or go for a coffee 'with' them. I feel the same about mobile phones and continual texting.
Cheers Dave
Well said Dave and I'm one for doing to the pub and meeting real people or even perhaps hat funny duarte's place then all seem to rave about. Must be the in place over there :-)
Oh sure, advertise it all over the Internet, we'll never get a table again. :)
Is there only one good place to eat on the lower west side then:-)!
FACEBOOK ooops, I said the F word too LOL
Birdman
Hi Dave,
It is always good to hear from you, and I totally agree about how dead the hyperboard has been lately. Yawn, yawn, yawn, I am getting so sleepy, and I wonder when the activity here will pick up a little. I really wonder, at times, where the "old timers" have gone, those folks like ChrisG, ChrisH, Brucester, Mouse (one of our cherished women members who I also never see anymore) and a few others who I really miss from the "good old days", that make me a trifle nostalgic.
Cheers, and take care, Dave!
David
I agree David. I've been wondering about some of the names you mentioned. It was particularly nice to have Mouse post to get her female perspective and she is such a nice person with great hair as well.
I saw ChrisG in real life just the other day. He has cut his hair again, although it's not really short exactly. It covers his collar and ears and he has a fringe (bangs). He is wondering aloud about growing it out again, but can't seem to make up his mind.
I think its due to the overall funk in the country with Obama at the helm, just my thought.
Oh what tosh i'll ask David about that!
You all are familiar with the old chestnut concerning conversation having lulls at 20 minutes after and 20 minutes before the hour. I have noticed a similar event regarding lulls in "conversation" in online groups. It passes. It is the nature of the human beast, socially, that groups, clubs, gatherings, etc. have a certain half life. They all are created, grow, flower and eventually fade away. However, total time varies. There are many active and passive cycles in any human interaction.
Good point. This reminds me of the bit about coin tossing. 4 heads in a row is not "strange". It's actually an expected result. Same deal with "slumps" in sports. If you have a 0.310 batting average (quite respectable) there are still likely to be rather long stretches where you hit NOTHING, and occasional stretches where you make pitchers melt like butter.
Hi Dave,
They are all lurking or don't have the balls to post as we can see from Justins thread. People that came out of the woodwork and just proves they do read. It's quite feeble really but if that's how it is these days there is not alot you can do.
Are you joining us on a regular basis again?
Cheers,
John..B
I don't know about regular John, but I still like to know what everyone is doing and see new guys undertake the longhair journey, its just that each time I log on nothing much has happened!
Cheers Dave
Well we got a bit more going on today :-)
Indeed we did :-)
--------------------
as to what is going on. No one has brought this up yet. Long hair on guys has become much more common and accepted than it was just a few years ago. As a result, fewer guys who are growing it out are seeking out a support group to help them deal with societal pressures regarding their hair. I have seen a real renaissance in long hair and noticed maybe a five fold increase in long hair on teenagers and pre teens as well. This is just my thought.
Scott
I believe your observations to be correct. I have also seen an increase in the number of guys with longer hair than just a few years ago. Of all age groups, body types, and income levels. Haven't taken a census, but I believe the numbers are up. Though I can't say for sure. but it is likely that my seeing more guys with long hair fed my subconcious and led me to the decision to grow mine back out.
Hi Scott, thats a very valid point and maybe that is true. But I have always felt that there was so much more to MLHH than just hair growth. I suppose I'm with Hairball on this one, I like the friendships and interesting topics too. It just sort of feels like the end of school, everyone has gone though so much and then just split their different ways, and all thats left is an empty feeling.
~ Dave
Now we've got some activity going!
Cheers
Kevin
Well forget the trimmers....eh lurkers!!!
I for one have been away for awhile cause I was just too busy to do much of anything online at all. In fact I didn't even keep up with my emails for a few months. Hopefully, I can stop by and post more often now, but I'm not making any promises.
Daniel
I'm in the same boat. I am back in school working on my Bachelor's degree, my kids have all gone back to school, I'm working third shift, and life in general has been really busy. I'll admit to being a lurker. I do stop by and check things out regularly, but I only post when I think I have something significant to offer. I don't have time for the 'social' aspect of the internet lately. Hopefully things will settle into a routine so I'll have more time, but only time will tell.
Hey Dave,
I agree that it's sad to see the diminished activity and I admit that I don't post as much as I used to. Having pretty much reached terminal length, I no longer take progress pictures and my site is gone. I love having my long hair but feel my journey is pretty much over. I've arrived as a longhair and I guess the thrill of seeing a difference every month is just no longer there.
I know this place is about more than hair though and I'm going to make a better effort to stay involved.
Jason
Hey Jason, I'm guilty too, life does get in the way sometimes!
~ Dave
