"US issues travel warning for Americans in Europe
French police officers reinforce security at the Eiffel Tower in Paris after reports of new terror threats, 20 September 2010 Intelligence sources say al-Qaeda plans to carry out attacks in the UK, France and Germany
The US government has warned its citizens to be vigilant while travelling in Europe because of the threat of an al-Qaeda commando-style attack, in a new travel advisory."
OK John, so what color warning are we looking at today. Is it red, pink orange,teal...oh I get soooooo confused!LOL.Cheers
Mark
I've no idea mate lol! They way I look at is just carry on as normal and if something happens it happens. I'd hate to live life hiding in a cupboard and scared of what and believe all they tell me!
Cheers,
John.B
Lol... I heard about this travel advisory thing also, personally I doubt I'd be in any more danger in Europe than I am in America, it's not like this place is all smiles and giggles either. Though really, I think you'd be about as likely to have an anvil on your head as you are to be killed by a terrorist. I think I'm far more likely to die on the American highway in a car than I am traveling in Europe under terrorist warnings, but that's just me, and it doesn't dissuade me from getting on the road! Like you I am also not keen on the whole "Let's all hide under our bed" attitude. If there were a real conceivable threat then sure, like "Stay out of Afghanistan" makes sense right now, but "Stay out of Europe?" Give me a break. *eyeroll*
Paranoia? Maybe. But to be fair, they didn't advise against travel to Europe. In fact, they made it a point to say they weren't. They just advised travelers to be more cautious.
I personally think they're just trying to cover themselves from future criticism. If they don't say something now and something does happen, the media would be all over them for being negligent. They're basically damned if they do; damned if they don't. I've come to the conclusion that the media is making things worse with their fear-mongering, so I've chosen to stop listening to them, as well as the government, anyway.
Yupp health and safety gone wrong!
Hey John,
WOW, these travel advisories are always a bit spooky; but neither do I want to live in constant fear to step outside and allow the sun to shine down upon me.
I guess it would be a fair comparison to say that if a crazed Nazi was running around town with a pair of scissors in their hands, that all longhairs should be forewarned to be cautious about going anywhere in public with their hair openly loose & down. I always try to be cautious in general and stay on the alert for any lurking danger in particular. But I certainly don't want to hide myself away for the rest of my life, either.
Al Qaeda and crazed Nazis have one thing in common: they both like to destroy things (especially lives). Gee, can't they find something better to do with their time? They need to have a nice goal to look forward to in their lives, like: maybe they should try growing their hair out!!
'Nough said!

So if I come over next year I shall be ever so fearful.
Perhaps you'd better hide me down at the Pub, The real ale pub
down the road from your place preferably. If they find me there
we'll run to the chip shop and hide, and if that doesn't work
we'd better hide in The Thatched Tavern. Could also hide me at
The Bell in Darby or at Dan's, or Tom's.
I better make a list
Kevin
And this is more dangerous than vacationing in Miami? Or LA. Or NYC.
Is it still paranoia if they really ARE out to get you?? LOL
But in all seriousness, nothing wrong with the occasional warning to be aware of what's going on around you. That's good advice for normal life anyway.
Frodo
Trust me with warning like that it does tend to stop people coming over to Europe. We know that from previous years it affects the hotels and business stuff. I'm sure we will have less over when the Olympics.
When you see he main headline headline "Terror alert" on Good Morning America it will put people off. Mind you most people don't watch ABC World News tonight and I doubt they know what's going on outisde the country :-)
Cheers,
John.B
PS...Mind you if I saw the headline "terror alert" on the lower west side it would not put me off!
Fewer American tourists in Europe......sounds lovely!
They'll give Obama another Nobel prize for that.
That would be heaven and we could move around London alot better and that would put the "speedy" bus trip operators out of business lol!
He would certainly deserve it :-)
Well manufactured paranoia just keeps working to keep the US War of Terror alive, opps I meant War on Terror alive for the American public. Probably if are visiting another country overseas as an American citizen do what some of the more experienced tourists do and that is to go "native". Dress in clothing that blends in with the country your visiting - no loud American themed T-shirts that would attract the notice of evil very bad scary terrorists!
Ah but some do like to make their presence known in London!
Hmmmmmm, well maybe the "War On Terror" industry will be what finally salvages our economy out of its doldrums.Who knows, it could be the next Microsoft:)LOL.
Just wait until the 10 year anniversary next year....all those 2 min silences!
