Yesterday I attended the Tulsa Indian Art Festival in Tulsa, OK (where my shoulder-blade-length hair was among the shortest on the men there). Among the exhibitors, two silversmiths (both from Albuquerque) had great silver hair ties. First was Kenneth Johnson (Muscogee and Seminole), who had both flat and curved ties in all sizes. His small ties were about $10,and I bought a one-of-a-kind large silver tie with an interesting stamped design for $120.00. He has a two web pages, One link is below; the other is www.kjewelry.com. The second silversmith was Aaron Brokeshoulder (Shawnee-Chocktaw and Pueblo), who had flat silver hair ties, from small to mid-size. I bought an oval one about 1 1/2 inches in length with a small onyx in the center for $25. He doesn't have a web page, but can be contacted by email: Brksholdr@aol.com. The small hair ties evolved from silver moccasin buttons.
Thanks for the info. I only see one URL in your message, but you indicated two. Do you still have another?
I didn't know how to get the second URL into the message. It is below.
Hello, I came across this dicussion quite by accident. Thank you for the plug. I have been handmaking copper, silver and gold hair ties from old coins for the last 10 years and I always appreciate a good reference from a customer. I started making this style of hair ornament out of necessity for a masculine, practical replacement for the barrette and pony tail clips available at the time. My mother's barrette backs would always break and I would have to fix them and the rest is a career. Aaron Brokeshoulder is a good friend of mine and we like to say we have the Native hair tie market cornered when we go to a show. I like to use old silver coins and he likes to incorporate stones and silver feathers that dangle on his. Either way, a very practical product if you want your ponytail or braid to stay put and look good. (I play basketball with mine on and it stays put!!). Again, thanks for the comments. MVTO
