Hi everybody. Im 22 years old from Puerto Rico. In November itll be 3 years of growing my hair and what a ride it has been. First of all I want to thank this forum and the people in it because I remember when I stared to seriously consider growing my hair long, I stumbled upon this site and it gave me motivation and inspiration to go ahead and grow it. Ive lurked the site on and off for this 3 years and always thought to myself that I have to introduce myself and join the site officially. Well finally I took some time to do it.
Ive kind of always liked long hair but never seriously consider growing it until I was 18. I think the main reason for growing my hair was a search for individuality. To me all short hairstyles look pretty much the same, theyre kind of boring, and I was unhappy about how I looked. I felt like a copy of the guy next to me. As a copy of what society wanted me to be, but not who I wanted to be.
Long hair on the other hand is so expressive, is part of you, your genes and who you are. Why repress it?? The other reason for growing my hair long is because Ive always been a little shy, and saw growing it long as a chance to do something for me without caring for what others may think. A chance to build some character.
So after some thinking and finding this site, I decided to grow it. At first I was only going for about chin length hair. But pretty soon I discover I had curly and frizzy hair, and lots of it. And at chin length, curly hair is still in a very award stage. In fact, I dont think curly hair ever passes that stage; at least mine doesnt seem like it. To be honest, at first I was a little irritated with my hair type and it discouraged me a little, but I kept growing it just to see how it will look like if it was just a little longer. And its been 3 years of doing that and I still want to see how it will look like a little longer. During the process of growing it, Ive learn to accept my hair type and even embrace it. Now I really like it because is so unique, it has a mind of its own, it never looks exactly the same every day. And besides, I think the world needs more long wavy and curly hair, society is too fixated on perfectly slick hair.
So, this is my official intro. Hope to make some good longhaired friends and share my experience with others.
My goal = BADASS long curly hair
PS Sorry for the bad quality cellphone pics.
Congratulations on three years' growth - looking good, and it's good that you are enjoying being yourself. Curls/waves rule!
Spectacular hair... Very nice look. Keep it growing. It suits you.
Hi there Myself!Ha Ha now that's an interesting handle but makes perfect sense.Oh, and welcome to the mlhh after years of lurking:)Your hair at 3 years looks outstanding and I give you curly hair guys credit being I think that type of hair is harder to deal with than perfectly straight hair.I feel you are doing the right thing in just letting your hair get longer as that's the only way you'll know for certain how you will look with longer locks.Otherwise it only a guessing game.
It was interesting to read that you only started to grow your hair out at age 18.I waited till after finishing high school to begin my first longhair journey and I can say it has never ended being I've never cut my hair short to this day.So that's close to 30 years as a longhair:)Hopefully you'll be a lifer too like I intend to be in regards to my hair.
Anyway thank you for coming out of the shadows and showing us you wonderful mane.Hope to see more of you here in the future my friend.Cheers
Mark
Myself,
I must say you are well on your way to your goal!!!
peace, jonalbear
Very nice hair!
And, you mentioned your reasons to grow your hair. They are different from most reasons I heard before... But when I think about it, these were rather important reasons for me, too.
Thanks for mentioning them and for making me think about the times when I dreamed about becoming a longhair...

Hey cool hair dude! us wavy/curly hair guys tend to work harder for our hair thats for sure lol
Welcome to the board my man :)
Great hair! I hear what you mean about creating character/being shy, one day you just wake up and realise that you are doing things because others want you to, but those people don't really care about you anyway so why do it just to keep them happy.
Good luck with your badass hair!
MattT
Thanks a lot for the welcome guys
Here's a back shot
Again sorry for the horrible quality pic and being shirtless (I was going to take a shower lol)
Ha Ha, don't worry about the picture quality and the fact that you are shirtless.Longhair actually looks better with no shirt on for some reason:)Seems more natural that way.Anyway your hair even looks awesome from behind so you have all the bases covered my friend:)Cheers
Mark
Thanks for the compliment Mark
Hi Myself,
Welcome to our community, you will find a lot of support here, and thank you for sharing your background and photos. You have an awesome, thick curly mane to be proud of, and by all means, keep it growing!
Welcome aboard,
David
Great looking head of hair there.
Hey 'Myself'
Glad you delurked so to speak, your hair is already badass, those curls give a classic look for sure, if you do decide to go waist length your mane will be phenomenal.
See you around,
~ Dave
Thanks Dave
Well right now I don't have a definitive length goal. I'm just letting it grow to see what it looks like. Waist sound about right so I'm really thinking about it.
Dear Myself,
Your hair is outstanding for only 3 years. In another year or so it will look trully BADASS. Waist-length curly hair would look right on you as the weight of the hair would stretch the curls out as it grows longer. I too have naturally curly and frizzy hair of which I am learning to embrace the curls. Yes curly hair isn't the best hair type to grow out in the beginning but boy does it start to look really impressive after a few years. And yes it does have a mind of it's own meaning that curly hair is NEVER boring. No expensive perms needed my friend and plenty of body too. There's quite a few members here on the board with curly hair one that comes to mind is the guy from Malta (known as shypii90).
Cheers,
Duncan
Yeah, you guys have me really considering waist length. At first it seems like a little too much, but seeing were I'm right now, might as well go for it. Like I told Dave, I don't have a goal right now for length, just letting it grow.
And I know what you mean about body. Mine has way too much body. Some days it can get really BIG. Could someone bring back the 80's and it's big hair fashion. I wasn't alive during that time so didn't get to take advantage of my big hair. lol
A warm welcome to Myself!
Very wise words and a great outlook!
Bruce
