Hey everyone,
I don't come around much these days because over the past 4 years I've been experiencing hair loss, but I've been on a natural treatment regimen for the past 8 months now, and the main focus has been treating my thyroid. My hair is showing signs of improvement (thickening, and vellus hair growing in areas that were bald near the temples), so these are definitely some encouraging signs!
Anyhow, another thing that I've noticed is that my facial hair seems to be growing in darker. I'm 28 years old, and it's grown in red for as long as I could grow it even though my hair is a dark brown (I'm part Irish). I only noticed a few months ago that there are a percentage of hairs that are now growing in black, and other people have commented on it as well. At first I was confused, but thought maybe it was a reflection of my improved health seeing as this developed around the same time that my hair started showing improvement. However, upon inquiring, a hair dresser told me that this happened to her husband before he started going gray!
For those who are gray/graying, did you experience anything like this prior to going gray? If not, does anyone know why my facial hair might be growing in darker all of a sudden?
Sorry if this is somewhat off topic.
Hi JK,
First of all, I think this thread is still very much on-topic, because it's all about HAIR!!!
Secondly, it's not all that unusual for one's hair color and/or beard color to go through some changes in life. It's all a matter of genetics. I wouldn't spend too much time worrying about it; just enjoy what you've got!!

As Ken said, hair sometimes just does what it wants to do. Also, other health issues can have an effect, and you did mention some issues with your thyroid. As an example, my father had reddish-brown hair when he was younger, then ran into some health issues that caused some significant hair loss. When these issues were resolved and the hair grew back in, it was dark brown to black. However, when he would let any of his facial hair grow, it would still come in reddish-brown. Much later, it all went grey.
As long as it's still attached to your head, I wouldn't worry too much about what color it decides to be.

I did experience that, but it had nothing to do with turning gray. My facial hair continued to mature into my early thirties. I experienced growth I never had before, including some color changes (some red mixed in with the black).
It was at least 10 to 12 years later before my facial hair started to gray.
Thanks for the response guys. I didn't mean to make it seem as though going gray was a disease. I know that it's a natural part of life that we all have no choice but to accept, but being 28 years old, and since I still have a baby face, I'd imagine gray hair in any capacity wouldn't be very flattering so it'd be nice if it could wait another 10 or 15 years at the earliest!
