Hey Folks, since I just started randomly posting here again I thought I'd share my long haired story. I was a long hair for about 10 years since 2000 and just recently cut back in August. People never thought I would cut and I couldn't believe I did it. I did it for a number reasons. I was working a security job in a grocery store and was being called everything from "mullet man" to "hippy" to just being asked stupid questions like, "Why do you have long hair?" Also, my boss was a prick and was always asking me when to hide it under a hat, etc. So one day I just snapped and got my girlfriend's friend who is a hair stylist to do the deed. I'll admit it was a welcome change for about a month, then I went into full on regret, and now I am in major regret. I plan on regrowing but I am considering a career in corrections and I know they are not going to tolerate a correctional guard with long hair. I have no idea what to do. I'm at that stage in my life where a steady career should be more important than hair but oh how I miss my mane. Any advice?
Well I got a steady career and I've still got longhair and I'm over 21 but a couple of years!
Cheers,
John.B

Honestly Steve I don't know what advice I could possibly give you short of looking for another line of work that is longhair friendly. The type of career you are looking at sure doesn't fit that bill.I give anyone credit who wants to be a corrections officer as that is hardly a cheerful work environment.Anyway best of luck to you.

Not everyone can have longhair unfortunately, I'm sure in time you'll get over the remorse and have a great career. Look at the bright side no more negative hair comments.

I was a corrections officer for a bit and I have to say I really hated it. Between the weird hours, dealing with scumbags all day, and being constantly sick I just decided it wasn't for me. It was my first civilian job after leaving the military and I just had to try a few different things. If you want to work in the security field you might consider concert type security, either working at a venue and making less money, or touring with a performer and making more money. Oddly enough most musicians couldn't care less what you look like as long as you can keep the crazies off the stage.

I believe one of our regulars here named "jonalbear" has a career as a corrections officer. I hope he reads your post and makes a comment to that effect, if I am indeed correct in my statements.
As far as regretting cutting your hair goes, I completely understand, as I cut my own waist-length hair back in Y2K -- but the good news is that it has long grown back to its former length now, and then some! Mistakes like this can serve as a good tool in valuable learning experience (it certainly did for me, at least). It made me realize, for example, that I needed to make a COMMITMENT to my hair staying long, because my regret was so deep and painful, that this is what made me realize I needed to be a longhair for life!
... I hope my comments have helped!

I could be wrong, and hopefully he will reply himself, but I seem to recall that he had to cut his hair in the training phase, but was then allowed to grow it back. That was in Michigan I believe. I imagine it is critical as to what state or other location you are in. The rules are probably all different.
