I went hunting last week and discovered a small benefit to having long hair. It was a little cold out, but not cold enough to warrant putting on a heavy hat that would interfere with my hearing. Instead, I just let my hair down. That provided just enough cover from the wind to keep my ears from getting too cold without interfering with my hearing at all.
Not a huge deal, but worth mentioning. Besides, I've been lurking for awhile without posting anything and wanted to let you all know I'm still here. :)
Cool topic. Same here. Plus, ever since the full pony tail, I enjoy the third or fourth day of camping when all the short hairs are looking all matted and mangy, while I pull it back out of my way and march on. At least one person has said to me, "I thought long hair was supposed to be more work."
Growing up I used to stay in the woods. I never wore my hair up though. Hiking, camping, rock climbing, never did much hunting. I thought I was a "wild child" haha.

I haven't been to any woods recently (other than to visit the CA Redwoods while on a family vacation this past August); but I do occasionally take walks along San Francisco's Ocean Beach...
It's been a tradition with me ever since I first grew my hair out to always loosen my ponytail, braid, or bun whenever I'm near the pounding surf, allowing the full effect of the sea breeze blowing through my mane, flying my freak flag loose & free! But, San Francisco being a particularly windy city, as well as our famous year-round chilly fog, after a few minutes of this, I find that one ear is always freezing (the ear facing the relentless westerlies), while the other ear is so enveloped and smothered with hair as to feel over-heated.
To compensate for this, I have to turn around and walk back in the opposite direction... Which causes me to get nowhere fast!
The only hunting I've ever accomplished while walking along the beach in this way was when I caught a large crab once -- and yes, I ate him for dinner!
