Here is the type of hair of have: very thick, wavy hair. The hair on the top of my head is about 3 inches long, and when my hair grows, it doesn't necessarily grown DOWN, it grows UP!
My solution is to wear a bandanna throughout the day (when appropriate) so that it "mats" my hair down. If I wear the bandanna for 4 to 6 hours a day then when I take off the bandanna it is pretty "laid down" on my head, but after a shower or a night's sleep, it's back to the poofed up thing.
My question is, are there any tricks to train hair to lay flat (slicked back) with no product in it? Not to mention, have the hair grow in that direction as well? I feel like what I'm doing with the bandanna trick is just a temporary thing.
Any suggestions/advice/tips?
*Perhaps this video will be of help to you in knowning why this is happening at this point.
*Again, the video and why your hair is Poofing right now. This is absolutely normal and you will grow out of this. Nothing to worry about.
*I know of no "tricks" with still such a short length, but with luck another long hair will know of a good one for you "at this point" in your long hair journey. Later on, things CAN be done.

Thanks for the link, Justin. It makes complete sense. And I totally understand the whole longer-the-hair-the-more-weight-and-the-more-it-lays-down theory.
I guess I just thought that maybe by "training" the hair to go back, that maybe the roots would go into that same back direction. Just some crazy wrong theory that popped into my head. :)
Nah.........not to worry, I am the "King" when it comes to the crazy dept. You just didn't know and all of a sudden this is becoming a common question guys have that are growing out their hair and never having known longer hair before.
I have always had that problem, If my hair is shorter than 3 inches, it does stand straight up, or out. Have always had the "poofy' problem, and it is also why I never cut it that short once it got past that length. Even in My "Corporate cut" years, I kept it relatively long. Your hair, as Justin says, will grow past this. Like all things about hair, it is patience training. As your hair gathers length, the natural thickness and wave will inhance the look. Just wait, You will love it.
Thickness. OMG............that's another one I am suddenly hearing about all the time these days. MANY guys who have never had long hair before and begin growing it out tell me that their hair is too thick. They just do not understand. And the ones that have it thinned-out when only 3" long regret it very much when it is 5" long. Guess I'll have to do a video on this one and point all further questions to the video.
Funny thing. When I was young back in 1492 we guys just grew our hair and never even wondered about all of this. All we knew was that it was going to take a while to get long and arrived as long hairs with no fuss or worries. Ah.........those were the days. :-)
Justin~
Well I started in 892 BC and thinning wasn'y invented then and never did me any harm and yes I have THICK hair!
Hey there, no worries. I started growing mine not long ago for the first time and had the exact same problem, with it sticking up all over. My advice is just to stick it out, it will fix itself on its own when it gets longer, it's very annoying but you can take comfort in knowing that it will solve itself in time. I'm at about 8 or 9 inches length now and it lays down good once it's brushed and will only get better as time goes on I'm sure. More length will add more weight to pull the hairs down with gravity. Best wishes. =)
