Hello all,
It's been about a year and four months since my last haircut, and the longest strands are about an inch past the shoulder now. I really want to try braiding it, but it doesn't seem to be long enough yet (my girlfriend confirms this). How long does it have to be before braiding is feasible?
(Before I was impatient for it to be long enough to keep out of my face, and now I'm impatient for it to be long enough to braid. Apparently I can't be satisfied.)
Kudos, by the way, for still using this ancient forum software... haven't seen something like this in probably ten years!

Well, I just recently started putting my hair up in a braid myself after about 2 and a half years of letting my hair grow out, I wore it down for most of that time... My hairs down to the tips of my shoulder blades and works well in a braid.
If you're only just passing your shoulders, it will probably still be a good while before you can put it up into a longer braid. I'd say when summer rolls around, you might be able to try it... but it will probably take longer than that.
Hey there,
I don't know about others, but I have been growing for about 2 years and I'm still not quite long enough to braid to my satisfaction. I think that once you're reaching your shoulder blades that it should be more feasible then.
As for the forum software, its stated in the FAQ that it's written by the maintainer of the site here, so I am sure that he's kept it up to date over the years, and it's probably not all that old. I've actually grown to like the simplicity of it from the point of view of an end user.

Ah, it just reminds me of a forum I used to go to about pet lizards back when I was about 12... it worked just like this.
Thanks for the tips, guys!
It hasn't even been a year since my last haircut yet but Im guessing by the way you discribed your length that the longest strands of my hair are nearly the same length as yours. (My hair reaches my armpits when its pulled strait)
And like you, Ive had some issues braiding its "short for a longhair" length. But I've learned that if you put it into a low ponytail first, and then braid that, it suddenly alot easier.
Hope this helps
Arend

I have among the longest hair here and may be a little biased. I would say maybe 4" past the bottom of your shoulder blades would be minimum for a good stable braid that will hold together well.

For a standard three-strand braid, your hair probably needs to reach the bottom of your shoulder blades for a stable braid, and it's much easier if you tail it first until your hair grows longer.
If you want to try a French/Dutch plait, you can wear those at much shorter lengths - basically if your hair is long enough to reach the braid plus another inch (if you use hairspray or two if you don't) it should remain stable. I did a French plait on a friend who had collar-length curly hair and it stayed in for three days.
