why are they even asking such questions?
such questions are never asked of women.
anyone want to present some opinions.
this is 2011, not 1961.
What a twit. No doubt an attempt at humor. but, it hits me wrong.
As to why such questions are asked, It's a sign of bad journalism training. Alin to asking what his favorite color are, if he were a tree, what tree would he be. Could be they were hoping to get some dirt on a possible part he was scheduled for, or hoping to play.
Women are adked about changes in their hairstyle. sometimes even why they have grown it long. However, long haired men, in this current society is fairly rare. still a stupid question, though.
Regardless of the date. This question has been asked.

They were just asking why he was sporting long hair, a generally unpopular and unconventional hairstyle (on men anyway.) I see no harm in this. It's not like they asked him "Hey, when are you gonna get rid of the long hair?" I think you're overreacting.
It's a silly question to ask, but I think his response means that while he's unemployed he gets to do what *he* wants with his hair rather than have it dictated by a part he's playing. Think about it, most actors looks are at the whim of the styling department.

It's just a dumb tinsel town thing for sure!
Actually, for an actor, it's a very practical and honest answer. Keep in mind that studios don't like to use wigs. If he's being considered for a part that needs shorter hair, he can have it the day he's cast. He's also ready for parts that would need longer hair. It's a practical move for any actor. At his level, the studio probably wouldn't balk at a wig ... but the longer hair does make him more desirable.
Sadly, most actors can only grow long hair while unemployed. For this reason I intend to at least buy the DVD of The Tourist, even though my wife and kids aren't interested in seeing it and the reviews aren't stellar, but because Johnny Depp acts an everyman role in it with long(ish) hair. We need to encourage that trend, and spending money on movies is the only way we can do it.
I'm pretty sure it is just friendly wording for the reporter asking if Christian Bale's longer hair is for a new movie role and Christian Bale responding with "No it's just because I get to grow it out when I'm not filming something." I don't think there is any hidden meaning. People ask the same thing if a longer haired actor gets a shorter haircut. They'd ask if they are playing someone in the military or a police officer. Anytime an actor changes their look, people will ask if it's for a role or just for themselves.
Exactly
I love long hair on men, and Christian Bale has inspired me to grow mine out. But there is nothing wrong with the question. The same question was asked of Emma Watson (Hermione in the Harry Potter films), when she chopped of her hair. Women tend to have long hair, so when they go super short, they are asked questions about it. Men tend to have short hair, hence the question asked of Bale.
Don't take it so seriously. Enjoy your long hair. Leave it at that. :)
