Hi guys,
I've been growing my hair out for 7 months now. 7 Months ago being the last time it was cut.
I have a bit of length at the back now, goes pretty much most of the way down my neck. But I noticed that on the right side of the back it curls outwards and sticks out.
I've tried using some anti-frizz remedies such as John Frieda's Frizz Ease. I've tried straightening it a few times (I avoid doing that most of the time though), but for some reason after a while it flicks back out.
I've even tried just wearing a beanie to work and it works for the most part, but now that its not as cold out its hard to keep that on my head. Plus because of the length of the hair now, it doesn't really hold it in check that much.
I hope its one of those things I have to deal with during the awkward stage.
So I guess I have to questions:
1. Will my hair eventually not stick out at the sides so much once I allow it to grow a few more inches in length?
2. Are there any other ways I can maintain its appearance for the time being?
Yes. It's perfectly normal and all of us here went through the same stage. It will straighten out with added length.
To maintain your hair, you could try a hat/beanie, hair clips, bandana, or hair gel. Honestly, though, the rewards are worth it in the end, so don't give up and definitely stop using the straightener. It will only damage your hair and frustrate you with split ends and dry hair in the later stages. Just let nature take its course.

i hate to tell you this but you have to get 14 months for this problem to smooth out, you can slick it back, wear a hat, ect. but whatever you do DONT CUT IT AT ALL!!!!! , i just hit 21 months and i am stll having akward days, i usually put it in a pony tail now. man you will get through this. dont listen that inner voice that says i dont want to deal with bad hair days, goodluck dude.
14 months maybe something of an exaggeration - it depends upon your hair not generalities. However will disappear as the hair gains length and thus weight. Whatever you do don't cut - that will just send you back to the beginning of the cycle again.
Perfectly normal. I'm around 1.5 years in give or take and mine still does that a little, though not as bad. I actually made it worse by trimming the back a little about 6 months ago (was trying to give the hair on top of my head more time to catch up, since I started from a buzz cut), should have probably just left it alone because it only made the back hairs goofier looking again. They're finally working their way back down again though. My advice is to just leave it alone, no straightener and no cutting. It will take a long time but it'll be worth it, the weight of the hairs will eventually pull it down so it doesn't stick sideways so much.
I had this happen to me as I reached the one year mark. It was on both sides of the back for me and turned out to be heavy curls haha
Like others have said, you're just going to have to wait it out-don't cut, it will be more than worth the wait. :P
