Hello all, have been browsing the site on and off for some months now and have posted a couple of times but never any pics before. This is my first time growing my hair and it's still going. I'm enjoying it for the most part (now that I'm coming out of the awkward stage and making progress through frustrating trial-and-error on how to wash longer, thicker hair). I don't really have a set goal length but I'll probably let it get to upper/mid-back at least and see what I want to do from there in a year or two. I've been growing for probably about 1.5 years (maybe an extra month or two, not sure) since my last close-cropped cut with the buzzers.
This first pic is my 'before' pic, I'll post a couple more from now.
From the side.
This last pic is from the back.
I want to thank you guys for the encouragement and all as well, I received a good bit of nagging from family growing it out and was tempted to cut it many, many times through the awkward stage due to teasing and having difficulty finding a way to clean it without gunking it up (it's fairly thick and I have trouble rinsing normal shampoos completely out of it). I actually trimmed a couple inches off the lowest part in the back to even it up some in the summer but have since decided not to touch it anymore.
I'm currently living in a small town in the south (not from here originally) and it's a bit uncommon in this area for guys to have longer hair (though not entirely unique). Thankfully I received my first positive comment recently; I bumped into one of my grandmother's close friends at the store a couple of weeks ago and when I saw my grandmother again she said that her friend called her that very day after she got home to tell her that she thought I looked "beautiful" with the longer hair and that she just had to tell her, lol... and now my grandmother is actually saying I should NOT cut it (for a change), so that's a good thing to hear.
Oh, and the flash on the camera washes the color out a little bit
in the images but it's actually a very dark brown (almost looks black in certain light or when wet).
Hi AnotherSchmoe,
Your hair looks awesome and what a great, inspirational story regarding your journey to date. You have to be very brave, as a guy, to go from what your hair was to growing it longer.Being you never had long hair before you are definately exploring unchartered territories my friend.I think you should go longer to see what you look like at that point. Some guys here have goals of just shoulder length but ultimately find they want to grow it down their backs:)Thank you for posting your first ever pics and for your participation on the mlhh.We need more guys like yourself;)Cheers
Mark
Thanks hairball, yeah I plan on letting it grow untouched for at least another year or two and then see what happens from there. I just figured it was finally getting 'long enough' to post a pic, I don't have any intention of stopping here. :)
Yeah I'd always kept my hair short like that before, the longest I'd let it get is an inch or two between cuts. I'd never really thought much about having long hair myself, though I always thought long hair looked pretty awesome like in "Highlander" and "The Last of the Mohicans" and such and finally thought to give it a shot. There's no harm in trying and I'm enjoying it so far. The transitional poofy stage was the worst but once I was finally able to pull my bangs behind my ears to keep them out of my eyes it became a lot easier.
It's growing out well. A few months and a bit more weight will see it hand beautifully.
Ignore those about you - they really do not know what they are talking about. Your grand mother's friend talks much sense and it is good she has told your grand mother that.

Your hair looks fantastic in this photo. In fact I like this photo the best. The waves are caused by your shoulders being in the way. Once past your shoulders it will straighten out. You have ideal hair to grow super long, if you decide to. Kudos to you for ignoring all the nagging from your family, regarding growing it long. Also kudos to your grandmother and her friend for being supportive.

Hi AnotherSchmoe,
Thank you for sharing your progess photos, and you have really come a long ways. Hair like yours is the perfect type to grow super long, and I hope you keep doing so.
Keep it growing,
David
The flaring out at the bottom is very cool I think. Also, your hair looks to be very healthy! Congratulations on your progress and hope you acquire the length and style you wish.
I see some purple tones in it. It reminds me of my color, which I always liked. I shouldn't say you looked really nice in the first 'before' pic, but you did. I'm not saying go back to that though. You don't, .. uhhh .... comb that hair or anything, .. do you?? .. Lol! ;p It looks really nice. Congratulations dude.
Haha, yeah it's normally not like that. I just combed it out real thoroughly and straight to show the length better for the pics. :D
Haha! yeah! I thought so. Ok! ;p
About washing it read about using cocnut oil on it.
You've got great hair. It already looks fantastic and will only look better with added length!
Your hair looks good. Have you considered regrowing your beard? Long hair and a beard are a great combination.

Thanks Absolom. I actually really prefer not shaving but it just doesn't grow in very thick yet and I end up looking a bit too scruffy for my liking. If it becomes denser with age (only 21 right now) then I'll most likely grow it back and keep it full time. Forgot to mention in the other posts, I still wear glasses I just had them off for the new pics, I also don't normally keep my hair down in my face like that, I part it a little closer to one side and brush the length behind my ears to get it out of the way. I can almost get it all into a tail but not quite yet so for now I just brush it back.
How many months have you got ?
Not sure exactly, I don't remember when my last "real cut" was but if I had to guess I'd say probably around 20 months give or take.
Thanks for posting your progress. It really does encourage others to keep on growing.
Congratulations!
