Today I saw a good movie called "The Eagle", about Roman soldiers in 2nd century Britain. Very well done in all respects and quite a number of supporting cast playing Britons have long hair. Needless to say the Romans did not.
Not as easy to find the longhair pictures as I thought :)
Here's a sample anyway:
Looking at this picture (and at most of the update photos from members of this community), it boggles the mind to think that according to society at large, long hair makes a man look "girly." I mean seriously, what could possibly make this guy look any MANLIER?

I agree Val as this gentleman looks anything but girly!lol.I too wonder what it is with society that irks them about a guy with a long mane.I still think it jealousy on the part of some.Either they aren't allowed grow hair themselves for whatever reason or they were just brought up from a young age being told men have to have shaved heads just so they can look extra ugly;)Ha!Have a nice Sunday:)

I read somewear that longhair on a man among the ancient Germanic tribes was a sign of a freeman; dominent and unbowed. Captured warriors were shorne of their hair as a sign of being dominated, not their own master, someone else dominated them.

True, It was also a belief held by Celtic tribes of Britain and Gaul. Romans, when they defeated their gaulic enemies would cut the prisoners hair as a way of showing they are now "owned' by the Romans. the Celts would also grow majestic moustaches. but were otherwize clean shaven. Never any beards. It was a cultural thing. The teutonic tribes of central Europe had no qualms about growing beards and many did. They would shave their beards short before battle so as to not have them grabbed by the enemy, making a beheading that much easier.
not bad.. what is it with the 'mean/smouldering' look... :)
Wow, does that mean that us Brits lead the way in long hair?
It seems so, unless you have some Pictish blood. Than you'll have the hair growth problem of the guy on the left :)
Erm no.. this is a made up film which really pissed everyone off in Scotland. The Picts (original people of this land) were dark haired, dark eyed, slightly dark skinned people who were very tribal. They had long hair, beards, hairy chests (and thats just the females.. ok just kidding there)
And were the only 'race' in Europe to beat the Roman Empire consistently and refused to be bribed by them - which is why the Romans built walls in the North of England to keep 'us' out. They also painted themselves - a bit like the tribes of your country (Apache, Commanche etc..) blue and were semi naked to scare off enemies (and we're a bit mad and it feels good)
This film, with these blue-ish kind of people (played mostly by English actors and filmed in Sussexm England btw.. is a piece of complete rubbish and the fact they filmed in england and used english extras just adds insult to injury. These are not true representitives of the Picta! We are gorgeous, natural, a bit wild and free!! Always!
OK rant over!!
I get a bit carried away when its my ancestors getting ridiculed by film people - i'll watch it and post judgement later... be w a r n e d !!!! :)
LOL that was a very entertaining rant, Asdis, don't hold back so much though :)
I didn't feel like the movie ridiculed anybody, but definitely set one way of life against another.
Hollywood is notorious for even messing up American people and history so don't take it personally! I am sure that they got lots wrong but if you just want to see some longhaired heroes (and villains!) in a well acted film give it a try. I would love to hear what you thought of it when you do see it.
Take care
Thank You - I aim to Please.. :) ??!?! hahaha
