Excuse the newbie rant ahead...
ok, SO...
Five months in after I last cut my hair. Flows and moves and has life in it and all... not bad for the 'awkward phase'
This last week, though... it started surprising me.
I mean, my hair's always been 'slightly' wavy... nothing too dramatic, but it was a little 'spice' to an otherwise pretty 'plain' hair.
Now, it started waving a LOT... and by 'a lot' I mean, as its starts to dry, it starts bending into these silly 'cowlick' (I think that's the word) things.
Its controllable on the sides... I pretty much apply some hairgel while its wet, and try my best to keep it tucked behind my ears.
But the back of my head starts looking pretty messy, and hairgel won't work...
Blowdrying it and using "Mom's Mighty Hairspray" works a 'little' on keeping it 'tamed'... but it starts POOFING up and I 'really' end up not liking the way I look.
I thought of trying 'something' to straighten it, but I have no idea what to try... since most products for straightening hair either have nasty chemicals, need a straightening iron, hot blowdrying, or a combination of all mentioned.
Anything you guys can suggest?
Is there anything 'natural and non-aggressive' I can try to keep my hair in check?
Thank you for your patience, and everyone take care.
Keep growing! Eventually this phase will pass.
Hats can help.
Thanks for the reply.
I'm hoping I manage to get it to 'behave' soon... or it starts behaving by itself as it grows heavier.
Hat's aren't exactly something I 'would' try... At least not in a 'corporate' setting.
But I'm hopeful =)
That does restrict your options! Pretty much all the things I have done wouldn't fly in a corporate setting.
Hi Trolleypup,
I've never worked in a corporate setting, either; but I have worked for conservative, religious-based non-profit organizations, for example -- including when I grew my hair out the first time (during the early-mid '90's). The awkward stages feel even more awkward in those kind of places... I remember using a lot of gel and hair spray until I could eventually tail it, yucky as it felt to me to even touch my own hair while enduring that phase.
My 2nd time of growing (after my horrible Y2K haircut) was much easier on me. Besides working in a much more relaxed environment, I really could have cared less what people thought about how my hair looked -- I just wanted to see my long hair back again!!
Catch you later, Trolleypup -- and hope all is going well with you, and with your MUNI job!

Poofing hair is often a sign that it's too dry, caused by too frequent shampooing and not using conditioner and oils. If you're shampooing daily, try skipping a day or two and only rinsing and conditioning between shampoos. You may also want to try applying a light oil to your still damp hair prior to drying. And if you must use a blow dryer, use it on low as high heat and high flow are just going to make things worse.

Thank you for your reply.
I'm not sure my hair can be considered as 'dry', since it starts looking and feeling really greasy after not washing it for two days.
I've tried only rinsing it out, and just using conditioner, but it only made me look like I'd fallen in a bucket of engine grease...
I heard that applying a little warm oil before washing can relax and 'straighten' your hair... might try that tonight...
Photographs of the problem would be helpful-
