Check out the new teaser poster for this summer's upcoming "Conan the Barbarian," starring Jason Momoa as the unconquerable Cimmerian! This looks like it's going to be an INCREDIBLE translation of Robert E. Howard's vision of the fantasy world's most famous barbarian.
Wow this looks like its going to be a good one, the governater was good though, James
I forget the actor's name who will be playing Conan but I saw another fantastic picture of his long hair. It's another fine example of longhairs becoming more commonplace.
Here's the link to a thread I started awhile back, with several pics from the film...
Conan movie (2011)
Thanks! I was on my honeymoon when you posted this originally and I missed it.
"I was on my honeymoon" is probably the most valid reason anyone can give for missing... well... anything! Cheers :)
it's a picture! truth will tell when the actual film comes out
The pictures alone show great faithfulness to Howard's description of the character and the world he inhabits, and interviews with the filmmakers regarding the story itself have been promising. Time will tell...
Looks really cool. I'm guessing they were going for the look of the Frank Frazetta painting of Conan.
I do believe Frazetta's classic was the inspiration for this poster. As for the casting of the film itself, I think Momoa is perfect. His partially-Samoan ethnicity gives him the bronzed tone of Conan, and his physique is spot-on to Howard's description of the character (though Momoa is taller, his proportions are correct). Most people today envision Conan as having a muscle-bound, bodybuilder-type physique, but REH described him as being 6-feet, 2-inches, and weighing 210 pounds, with a "pantherish" muscularity.
As for the hair, some people have complained that the style used in the movie isn't quite as described in the original stories. I read one interesting response from the director regarding the departure from Conan's "square-cut mane," i.e., bangs, in which he stated that they simply couldn't find a way to make it look cool or attractive by the standards of today's audiences. I think they made a good decision in making this aesthetic change.
It's always nice to touch base with fellow Conan fans!
I agree with you-Jason will make an awesome Conan--more like the what the character in the book is described...I never liked the depiction of Arnold as Conan-much too muscular...Jason fits the role perfectly, his looks are just right for the part.
It appears that he is wearing a wig. According to wikipedia, he cut off his dreadlocks at the end of season four of Stargate which would correspond to 2008. I suppose it's possible that it could have regrown by the time those publicity shots were taken but it seems unlikely it could have made it to this length.
I wonder if he would have gotten the role if he hadn't cut his dreadlocks. I can't imagine Conan with dreads and it would have been hard to take them out.
He did cut his dreads off due to severe, chronic headaches. I'm not sure if this is a wig, or if his hair is once again long, with possible extensions. In my opinion, the on-screen depiction of a long haired hero is a good thing, whether or not the actor's actual hair is long.
I would agree with that. It's certainly better than having a shorthaired character. Wigs and makeup have come a long way and they look very realistic. Take the Lord of the Rings movies - almost all, if not all, of the actors and even the actresses had wigs or extensions. Those movies did a lot to promote long hair on both sexes. I've heard many times on hair forums that the inspiration behind growing that person's hair was those movies.
I think Jason makes a great Conan-Can't wait to see him in the movie...I remember him in a TV series called the North Shore I think-where he played a bartender and he had those awesome dread-locks...
