This weekend I took my son over to the barber shop to get his usual crewcut (he likes it that way, so whatever). My beard was getting a bit shaggy for my tastes, and trimming it myself is kind of a nuisance, which is largely why it was a bit shaggy, lol. So I decided to go ahead and get it trimmed. Yeah, I know, there was my mistake...
After the barber gets done with the young'un, I sit down and tell her, "I want it about a half-inch long". Well, by the time she finishes snipping, what I end up with is definitely NOT half an inch, probably more like an eighth, maybe less. It's nice and even all around, nice clean edges, but it's NOT the length I asked for.
Oh well, lesson learned... again...

Oh, and by the way, while I was waiting for my son's haircut, she noticed my ponytail and gave me the infamous "are you gonna donate some to cancer patients?" question. I told her I donate my time and money for various causes, I grew the hair for myself.
I find that a standard beard trimmer works well. Just adjust the guard to the desired length and you're pretty much assured an even trim. I just cut off my two inch long goatee and will probably go back to a short beard.
I had a beard trimmer that worked quite well, until it finally died on me after a few years of use. I've been using a set of hair clippers similar to those used by many barbers, but those aren't as "user-friendly" for beards as my old one.
Guess I need to keep shopping for another dedicated beard trimmer.
I dont understand why so many people (mostly women - which is weird) think a guy should only grow his hair out for charity. When my hair was at its longest (mid back) I had a stripper at the strip club come up and tell me that if I was growing my hair out to donate it, then it was ok for me to have it that long. But if it was long for any other reason, thats not cool and I needed to cut it. Obviously she didnt get a dime of my money that night. :)
Yeah, I've never figured out where this concept came from that the only purpose to a guy growing his hair past the shoulders was to serve as a hair factory for wig production.
I've also never figured out where some people get the idea that I should have any concern over whether they approve of the length of my hair.
Thankfully it was only your beard that got cut too short and not your mane. You'll recover that beard length rather quickly but again another example of hair stylists who don't listen.
Yea, you gotta love those hair donation comments:(Could have told her you were planning on buying a few tons of synthetic hair from China to be made into wigs. And to think I bet you could get any color under the sun too!Cheers

Do you live in Canada? (bit like goldfish)
No, southern Maryland.
I think the key is to ask around and find a hair stylist you can trust and stick with them. There are good ones out there that won't butcher your hair and will give you what you ask for. Just be sure to explain carefully what you want, and ask questions if you're not sure they understand.
