The self-trimming did go well. Only snipped off like 1/4 inch or so. Perhaps more in some places. It took a while, but it feels a bit thicker and healthier now, and hopefully it'll look even better as it grows longer :)
This is definatly the way to go when it comes to trimming!
Visit a salon, and you might get more than just the ends snipped off.
Do nothing, and your ends will look more and more scruffy.
Hi Abstrakt,
I used to cut & trim my own hair, including back in the day of when I kept it short.
During the late '80s I had sort of a mullet thing going on -- although more layered and more nicely "styled". Then one day I decided to do a little trimming on my own.... The next thing I knew, I had made a few mistakes -- the only way to fix the situation being to cut off all the nice length that I had worked so hard to grow for over a year.
If you do ever decide to go to a salon, DON'T go to one of those cheap chain-store ones -- they will indeed butcher your hair!!! Generally speaking, if you are willing to pay a higher price to go to the best salon in your town or area, you will get a more experienced stylist, one who will listen carefully to what you want (and then DO it that way)... It can be worth the price, if done that way!
Other than that... nowadays I just do the "Search & Destroy" method of simply only cutting off any split ends I see.

Once your hair gets to belt length or longer, self-trimming is very easy. You can either put your hair over your shoulder, or reach around your back.
You are so right-I had a trim last april and the women cut off so much off!! And to my amazement I remained seated while she was cutting Dugh!! I've been trimming it myself now that it's longer-so much better because I barely trim- I cut only the hair that are out of place-I just did a trim today.
