I just read a news article which stated that the active ingredient in Propecia has been found to cause long-term erectile dysfunction in men. I know that a number of our community members here at MLHH use or advocate the use of this product to prevent hairloss, and thought this information was worth passing along.

Hi there,
Long-time lurker with an answer -
I'm 43, and have been using propecia for 10 years - with no ED side effects at all. I have an older friend (I think in his mid-50s) who used it for 2 years and developed ED. Maybe it's an age thing? Perhaps I will notice something in another decade? Not sure how one can predict that - probably worth a conversation with the prescribing physician.I'd imagine that one can just stop using the drug if side effects develop.
I used Propecia for one year then switched to Avodart. I had a little ED problem the first few weeks after starting Propecia then things went back to normal. When I started Avodart I had the same problem for about a week then my libido increased to above normal levels and has remained that way since. I have been taking Avodart for several years now with absolutely no problems and no additional hair loss. Your doctor may, or may not be familiar with these treatments for hair loss. If you have done a lot of reasearch on the matter then you will most likely know more about hairloss than most MDs.

This was one of the known side effects from the start, which is why I personally would never chance taking it. Mind you, I don't have a hair loss problem anyway, but there are some things (very few!) that seem more important than keeping one's hair.
OTOH, there are some people here who have used it, and I imagine if they had a problem they would have switched to something else.
