Hi my husband had his lovely long hair cut last Saturday after having long hair for seven years. He had alot of broken hairs and it fell in his face alot at work even though it was in a pony tail.He has now decided to regrow his hair to shoulder length. He did have it waist length but has decided against that (much to my disappointment).I'm just looking for advice really. How long will it take to grow long again and what can he do to prefer all the broken hairs. They never seemed to grow long again.I'll post a pic of original length
I would guess that it will take about 2 years. If he want the front and the back all one length. If I where him, I wouldn't cut it at all, until it reaches this length in both the front and back.
Hi, thats a shame, normal hair growth is around half an inch per month, so you are looking at two years to grow a foot long. Broken and short hairs are just one of those things unfortunately, I have them all the time, he just needs to be very careful when untangling and combing, especially if wet.
cheers Dave
I have been using Wild Growth Hair Oil and Wild Growth Light Oil Moisturizer for about 8 months now and I have been having a lot less broken hairs and I don't get any split ends anymore. I was thinking I was at terminal length but about the last month my hair has started growing again. I get it at Sally's
Since others addressed your other concerns, I'll focus on this.
Buy MSM (Methylsulfonylmethane )at a chain pharmacy (on the vitamin supplement aisle) or at a health food store. Take two 1000 mg capsules a day. MSM helps build keratin, which makes weak hair stronger and less prone to breakage; so if your husband is having a lot or breakage, he may be deficient in sulfur. Eating sulfur-rich foods can help; broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, etc. Egg yolks, milk, yogurt, lean protein meats. Many find supplementing with MSM to be the easiest way to insure adequate sulfur in the diet. MSM is fairly inexpensive too.
Hair can also be prone to breakage if it's dry and brittle, so another thing to do is to use a leave-in conditioner after normal washing. Or you could try using an oil such as coconut, jojoba or almond; which several board members do. If he has a lot of flyaway hair, Aloe Vera gel is an excellent humectant that helps to retain moisture in the hair. You can find it in the skin care aisle at the store. You can apply it to dry or damp hair at any time, and it does not leave a residue. Aloe swells the cuticle and retains moisture, making brittle hair flexible. It's very cheap too, a few dollars for a big bottle.
Finally, use a large wide-tooth comb for combing wet hair, and don't pull knots. Never use a brush on hair that is wet or damp. Since hair goes through normal cycles of shedding and new growth, you will always have hairs shorter than the rest, if they keep getting in your face, use an alcohol-free gel (Pantene makes one) or a bit of mousse to help them lay in place. Trim split ends individually (called doing an S&D, Search/Seek and Destroy), or every few months you may do a 'dusting'; this is where you snip just the very ends of the hair, no more than a quarter of an inch.
Perhaps these tips might help your husband grow back his hair, where it will be stronger and less prone to breakage.
JustCarol,
This is GREAT advice that I will take to heart as I try to re-grow my once glorious mane. I had no idea aloe vera was good for hair. I will for sure try this.
SKJ74,
Best of luck to your husband in his journey. I just recently cut my shoulder length hair due to excessive heat damage and cant wait until mine grows back out.
Thank you every one for the advice. He did have alot of broken hairs near the front and they never seemed to grow.He does work in a dusting dry atmosphere most of the time.I think the leave in condition is a very good idea and the advice about food. Not sure if he can get the vitamins suggested as we are from the Uk so not sure we can get them here, but I shall look.Just wish I'd ask you all for advice before the drastic hair cut:(
MSM isn't a vitamin, it's a nutrient often available as a supplement. It does go by other names, DMSO2, methyl sulfone, and dimethyl sulfone, so you _may_ have to look for it under an alternate name. It also may be available as a loose powder in a jar, rather than capsules. Hopefully you can find it somewhere under one of the above names. Good luck to your husband with his hair regrowing journey.
