Hey guys,
Lately my hair has been full and long enough to wear in a braid- I even wear my braid when I go to bed. I noticed that it's much more comfortable to sleep with...I'm also liking wearing it all the time, because it just keeps my hair in place...Some people have told me that wearing a braid all the time breaks your hair..I don't find it to be true-however, I would like ask some of u guys if this is true...Will wearing a braid constantly damage my hair?
Dee.
Well, I've been wearing mine in a braid almost every day for about five years now, and I can't say I've noticed any ill effects. If anything, I'd say it was the other way round, and it actually protects the hair from drying out and getting caught in things.
Viking, thanks for your answer! I thought the same thing-if anything a braid protects my hair...Cool I feel better now wearing all the time-I really like better than a ponytail especially for sleeping...BTW you have awesome hair!
Dee.
Any time.
About all I'd recommend is that you use a tie with no metal clasp and don't fasten it too tightly.
Dee,
wearing braids (and well, up-dos for females :-) actually protects your hair. On longhair community there is also a challenge to "wair your hair up for X weeks/months/years". No wind damages, tangled hair, etc.
If you like to look up historical longhairs (both male and female) most of them wore their hair in braids or updos (like, samurais, indians, mad scientists ;-) )
Hope it helped,
hugs,
Eva
And for those of us of Northern European heritage, many of our ancestors wore their hair in what was called a "Suebian knot", where the hair was pulled up and literally tied in a knot.

Wearing your hair in a loose braid is perfectly fine and will not cause added or abnormal fallout. If there is any tension or a tugging feeling as a result of the way you braided your hair then you're putting your hair at risk if this practice is not corrected.
Use an elastic that has no metal clip, and only as tight as necessary to hold your hair (the pressure at the same location can eventually damage the hair). For sleeping, you may want to look for a silk (or other slippery fabric) pillowcase to reduce the amount of rubbing...ditto for daily situations where your braid gets rubbed against chairs and the like, this will be more of a concern as the braid gets longer.
Nice "Trailwork" pics!. Very nice indeed!
Wearing a braid doesn't harm your hair, but it may give the appearance of doing it. That's because all the hairs that you would normally lose, which would immediately fall out, get caught in the braid, and when you un-do it, they fall out all at once.
A normal, healthy, person loses up to 100 hairs a day, just because they reach the end of their growth cycle.
yes it is bad. The constant pulling both breaks yiur hair and tends to pull it out.
Better to mix it - braid wne necessary - eg work etc, loose when possible.
For nine years I've been using the segmented hair bands
(no metal parts, of course) with excellent results and no
breakage. Also creates amazing waves. As an artist I need
to wash my hair frequently and braiding tends to take up
a bit more of my time.
