Hi all. I have been wanting to grow my hair long for some time now, but I always get to a certain point and become frustrated due to how thick and "poofy" it gets. I have naturally think and wavy hair and wonder if it might not fall after awhile. I just need some tips on getting through the ackward stage. Especially because I'm not sure it will fly with those at work. I appreciate any insight.

I have thick, wavy/curly hair as well. The most I did was wear a beanie to flatten it. I know it can look really strange and such, but I'm a believer in not using product or anything like that. I use organic shampoo and conditioner, air dry, never use product or heat. Eventually your hair will weigh itself down, its just a matter of time.
Good advice Rich! Beanies work awesome taming hair like ours!
Beardedpiper, I too am a thick wavy. You can use aloe gel or some mousse to help give it some control without the stiff sticky feel. Other than that, you just have tough out this phase until it gets heavy enough to tame itself. Just gotta hang in there :)
You will need to get used to alot of negative remarks and let them roll of your back with a smile. Start noticing other long hair with admiration and set goals for yourself. It's a long slow trip so be patient. Tommie
Photo request please of your hair bp. Thanks! J.M.M.
Hey there, you just have to tough it out for awhile. Eventually the hairs will be long enough that they will be pulled down by their own weight. In the meantime just wear a hat or use some mousse or something, even rubbing in a little olive oil might work (I do this whenever mine gets dry, I don't know how it would work if it's still fairly short though). I'm at about shoulder length now, first time growing as well, it is difficult at first and there are many temptations to cut but it's worth if it if you stick with it. I'm having fun with it now and most people don't bother me about it anymore, guess they got used to it. Also, just don't ever use any sort of hair dryer or straightener or other heat products, and don't dye or bleach it. I hear that stuff like that will damage your hair. If you want to grow it long you want it to remain healthy and natural. Best wishes to you. :)
According to everything I have ever read and/or personally experienced, the thicker one's hair is, the greater the challenge
is to grow it out. I almost gave up myself 9 years ago.
My God!
Anyway, I agree with the other opinions expressed by other members
on this post: Hats and other kinds of hair restraints.
You might also benefit by using TreSemme NATURAL Shampoo and
the companion TreSemme NATURAL conditioner. Best I ever used
so far!
Good Luck on your Long Hair Journey!
I agree, I also use TreSemme Natural shampoo and TreSemme natural conditioner. I am happy with the results. I toughed it out as my hair grew, I do not wear hats. Hate "hathair" The "poofiness" does wane a bit as your hair achieves greater length and it own weight comes into effect. Unlike the free flowing locks of my earlier iteration with long hair (Back in the neolythic 60s and 70s, it was raely tailed) I wear a tail daily. Once you can form up a tail that also relieves a great deal of "poof" It takes time, and growing hair is great patience training.
Rktect- I agree with you once you're able to tie your hair, it does become much easier to manage...I had a difficult time with the awkward stage and couldn't wait for it to pass-like you said, it requires a lot of patience...When I come across a guy with long hair-I say to myself this guy must have a lot of patience...Because that's what you need to grow it long...After the ponytail stage, it's smooth sailing...I constantly wear my hair in a messy ponytail or braid almost constantly as well.
