Well, I went to the barbershop today, because I hadn't cut my hair since the last summer and the tips were getting little too shaggy. So I asked the barber to cut as little as possible. She cut about 5 cm or 2 inches. I know it isn't much, but I feels awful. Losing hair is like losing a piece of your soul :D. Now I'm just going to spend next couple of months growing it back, I guess.
I posted a picture so you can compare to the previous. It's back in the sleeping with hair tied vs. not -thread.
Hey Axel,
I feel for you, bro. I hope never to go to a barber again. It will take you about four (4) months for you to grow back the hair you lost. I know what you mean when you say that you feel like you lost part of your soul. For me, a haircut feels like a violation, something violent and unnatural.
In regard to your question about whether to wear your hair tied back or to let it go free when you sleep I say let it go free.
I suggest that the next time you think about going to a barber to get your ends trimmed jump on this hyperboard. There are many of your brother longhairs here who could advise you as to how to handle those split ends without losing part of your soul.

Here's something I sometimes do if my hair need a slight trim around the back. I have a friend who has classic length hair and we give each other dustings and minor trims when needed. I fully trust the other person and she trusts me as we both enjoy having long hair:)
Alternatively you could also try a self-trim using Freya's instructions which you can find on the internet. In my opinion the hairdressers and barber shops have an oversupply of haircut fetishists working in them. They are just too fond of cutting hair short for it to be healthy thing to risk going there for a trim.
The good news in your case is that your hair will grow back in 4 months returning to it's previous lenght and the ends will most probably be healthier then they were before:)
Can you give me a link to the self-trimming instructions? I think I will be leaning towards that option in the future.
The link can be found in the Links section of this site.
You should go for the self-trimming thing for sure! I tried it myself, and got good results. Much cheaper too.
I bought a pair of "professional" hair scissors at ÅHLENS for about 140kr, which is cheaper than going to a decent barbershop, and it will give you an infinite ammount of trims for the same price :D
It does take time, patience, and a bit of skill, though.
As Duncan says, in four months normal service will be resumed, and the ends will be be really healthy. Don't worry too much.
Cheers Dave
Like everyone else said, in a few months you'll be back to where you were, with healthier hair to boot. Personally, I haven't been to a barber in over a year, and have no intention of returning anytime soon, if ever. Last time I went, I had to have another barber fix it, and even then I lost a lot. My trust for them is basically at nil.
It looks fine, but it's probably best to never, ever have someone give you a trim. If it's absolutely necessary because of severe split ends, do it yourself so you can control everything, and trim only the very tips. It's generally not necessary to cut off more than 1/4 inch - and only for those hairs that are severely damaged. You've got great looking hair, and it'll get even better looking as it grows longer. Good luck.
Hey Axel, I wouldn't get too down about it as your hair is still long and it could have been much worse..They could have scalped you back to the shoulders and that would have been devastating.Just look at it as a learning curve to becoming a true longhair my friend.Cheers

wow awesome hair man! keep it goin!!
Hey Axel,
As others here have said, after a few months, you will be right back to where you were, with only a minor setback.
I also know how it feels to lose more hair than you want to. There was this one time I went for a trim at the salon I had been going to since I was a small boy until I decided to start growing. This had been one of the first times I came back as a longhair, and the stylist convinced me I needed to remove between "3-5 inches" and I stupidly allowed her to do her thing. Needless to say I did feel a little loss at it.
Now on the few times I do go for a trim I am very specific with my requests! When I go in I tell them exactly how much I want removed and from where.
You have an awesome head of hair, keep it growing! :)

I know what you mean about feeling like a haircut messes up your soul haha. I mentally cringe every time my school forces me to get one. Hoping that I can make it to June without getting another.
But your hair's awesome, dude! It'll grow back quickly enough. :P
