Hey guys I was wondering if you have experience from using a henna hair dye as I bought me some dark brown henna dye for my hair to give my hair color a richer dark brown color to it and to make my hair softer, any tips on using it? And I had major knee surgery back in March (had a dislocated right kneecap and my knee kept going out on me) and I am in therapy for my knee now and in a few months I will be able to walk and drive again, but for now I am disabled, but I am healing well. :) Hope everyone has been doing good! And here's a picture of me just before surgery in March 2011, showing off my long thick sideburns and some of the hair, but not an official update yet :P
A lot of companies market chemical dyes as henna, so be careful. Also, it's really messy to apply and wash out, and you might smell a little like a lawn for a day or two, but the real stuff gives your hair a great texture.
Antinous: I have been using Henna for almost three years now---To me the best Henna around is from Mehandi.com---check them out, they are also very helpful in giving u what u want...They are actually pretty cheap-I usually buy a bundle from them for 20 bucks and it last me for months---I also agree that u need to be careful with some other hennas because they advertise all natural henna and it does contain chemicals---Henna for me has done wonders to my hair, it is a bit messy to use however, u get used to it and it really beats chemical hair-dyes---The best way to mix Henna is with lemon-it's the only thing I use to mix it with...People tell u that u should mix this and that and some more crap..Don't listen to them---Henna + Lemon is all u need...And, u will have a bit of a stink which last a few days-but nothing horrible, kind of smells like hay---I definitely recommend it, once u start using it u won't try anything else...(But remember to use all natural henna) Rule of thumb-Henna is only one color and places that sell u a box of different color henna is all bull...Henna is an orange dye that u can mix with other natural product like "Buxus or Indigo" ...With Buxus u get a nice brown color and with Indigo u get a dark brown...I suggest u go with the buxus because Indigo tends to go too dark and then it's hard to get back to a browner color...Henna dye is permanent and then all u need to do are the roots if you get greys---Def check out Mehandi.com---a well of information about henna...Good-luck and let me know how it works out---I just did a henna treatment last week---The best thing about henna is that u can do it as often as u like---Hope ur knee feels better!

Hi dee,
Your endorsement of Henna kinda makes me even more want to try it but I'm soooo afraid to mess with my hair with the unknown.Well to me its the unknown.lol.Currently I've experimented with coconut oil and so far like the results:)Takes a bit of tinkering as you can overdo a good thing.I also went to washing my hair once a week from daily and really like how silky my hair feels as it oils up more as the week goes on.Sure it may look flatter but it feels so good to run your fingers through.Anyway if I get up the nerve I might just give Henna a try:)Cheers
Mark
Henna wears off. It's just a coating, so it's quite safe to experiment. Try neutral henna (which isn't actually henna) just to improve your hair texture. It will impart a little yellow to any gray hairs, but not enough to worry about roots.
If u use 100% pure henna- it does not wear off-it's permanent!! The dye molecules penetrates the hair shaft and coats it--Depending on your natural color the henna is translucent therefore letting your own color come through with a bit of color enhancement...Been using henna for three years now and it has never faded away...The more u use it the more of a build up of henna u get.(Which is a good thing because it protects your hair and it conditions it)After I use henna I don't need to use conditioner for a month because of the conditioning the henna gives you.
Hi Mark,
They also have henna as a gloss treatment that leaves no color residue---If u like the oily feel-henna does nourish the hair and u notice your hair get a bit oiler therefore, u don't need to add any other type of oils-especially if u wash it once a week-u will def see good results with henna...I'm telling u I've been using it for three years and my hair has gotten so much thicker and fuller...It is a mess to put on-but it feels so organic as well...U will notice your scalp become much healthier too! And if u ever want the greys covered it just leaves it a nice golden color---I'm just starting to get some greys and I did a treatment last week. It just leaves my hair with a nice natural tone...The best thing about it is if u do it once and u don't like it u never see any roots because it blends in with your own color...All u see is the new greys that start to grow out...
Hi dee,
Thanks for telling me your experience with Henna as it does sound like a wonderful haircare option.I would love to see someone in person who actually used Henna just so I can verify what it looks like after being applied to hair.I know I can look at pictures but sometimes it just doesn't show the texture well.Anyway I will check that website on Henna and probably give them a call to inquire about their products.I'm getting the Henna itch:)LOL.

Mark- I used to wash my hair daily and then went to water shampooing for a maximum of 19 days(When I did this I think my hair had a humongous growth spurt) -however, I missed the clean feeling that u get right after you shampoo...Then I went to once a week shampooing but now that I started working again I've been washing my hair twice a week, which I think is a good regime for me-since I have oily hair. And Like I mentioned before just last week I did a henna treatment and it does make it a bit oilier...But after i wash my hair it looks and feels amazing!
After I wash it I leave it down until I get to work because it takes my hair awhile to air-dry,even then it's still damp...But, just last week I walked into work with my hair down and just washed and the waitress asked me if she could touch my hair...I said sure-but, u better wash your hands first lol...I have really been getting such great compliments from the people at work...It's always back in a ponytail or braid because it is a restaurant and u need to keep your hair tied up because of the food...I'm so glad I didn't give in to frustration and cut my hair when I was looking for work...(Thanks to the support of this board)
Mark,
Have never used dye,so I have no expertise or advice there! Hope your knee heals quickly and you are back on your feet again soon!!!!!!!!
peace, jonalbear
What distinguishes this picture from an "official update"?
My hair isn't all shown in this picture, just a good chunk of it haha
Hey Mark, glad to see you stop back on the board again:)Even though its not an "official" update your hair looks fabulous just the same.I'm sorry to hear you are kind of disabled at the moment but you are young and will bounce back easily my friend.Do take care of yourself as I do care about our longhaired friends here:)Cheers

Hi Mark,
Good to hear from you again. Sorry to hear about your surgery and i do hope that it's a one-off and your knee improves. When i was 14 i had a skiing accident and broke my left knee and tendons and spent 4 long months in a plaster cast getting about on crutches. When the plaster was removed the leg was as hairy as moss!
Look forward to hearing your progress on all fronts.
Best,
Duncan
