Guys-
I get different answers from people about hair shedding...Some people tell me that you shed more hair in the winter and less in the Summer or vice-versa...Where I live our weather is barely turning into Spring-however, I'm beginning to shed more hair than usual and people tell me that it's normal for this time of year...My hair is pretty full and I see no bald spots therefore, I'm not too worried about that...But, I am really shedding alot tho...Should I be worried? I haven't started taken biotin yet-I noticed I didn't shed as much when I was on it...I've read also that you can take "lecithin". What is this? I know my hair is growing because every month that goes by I'm noticing greater length...And, I guess that means that my hair is growing pretty good...I especially noticed a big growth spurt the last couple of months...
Thanks ,
Dee.
Hi dee,
Normally I would notice more shedding of hair in the fall during the months from September through October. If I recall it may have happened in the spring time too but so far this year it hasn't happened yet.I think it may be due to the fact I've adjusted my hair care during the winter to include the use of coconut oil and less frequent washing. It seems to me every time after my hair has been washed I shed more hair but as the days go by it really decreases.I'm blaming the shampooing overdrying my hair causing it to pull out more when I comb or brush it.It'll be interesting this fall how my hair will behave, shed wise, with my new routine.

Vatika oil and Parachute coconut oil will make your hair strong, soft and healthy.
I have shoulder length blond hair and there is a lot less hair fall since I have been using this.
I only wash my hair 1X per week, sun dry, only use a wide tooth wood comb when I have to other wise I finger comb.
I don't abuse my hair or mess with it too much, as all hair is dead hair...
I will concur with keeping wear and tear to a minimum. This has helped me realize some added length.
I usually wash only once a week and finger comb. I'll do this with a dot of jojoba oil on my finger tips if my hair feels dry.
I keep my hair in multiple hair ties like Scott does, or in a braid. I can usually leave my hair in the ties or braid for 3 days/nights without having to mess with it at all.
Onward and Downward!

7 years. For a fortunate few, it can exceed 10 years. For those unfortunate folks with a 2 year growth cycle, 12" is about the maximum length they will see. My growth cycle is at least 7 years. All of my shed strands have broken ends. Many of my shed hairs are in the 40" range and always have broken ends. My longest was 49 1/2" long. That would be 99 months or 8 years and 3 months at 1/2" per month.
For the average guy it is probably about 4 years, enough for a 2 foot mane which would be a bit over waist length for a guy of 5'11" in height.
Don't get discouraged, Dee. Your hair will probably reach your waist, if you give it a chance. You should take biotin, MSM, saw palmetto, and lecithin to help your hair to grow to full length. Glucosamine may also help your hair as well.

Thanks Scott! Yea I need to get some Biotin-I was taking it all last Summer and Fall-until I got laid-off and I just could not afford vitamins and supplements-However, just started working again and will start getting all the nutrients I need...Like I said-My hair is pretty full and I don't seem to be thinning-it's just been shedding alot lately or maybe it just seems to me because it has gotten so long lately---I mean my hair seems to be pretty healthy considering I haven't taken any supplements...Someone just told me the other day that I was shedding because of the weather...I see it in the shower-but when I comb or brush hardly anything at all---maybe I'm just freaking out unnecessarily.

The amount of biotin I take is 5 mg. (It will likely say 5000 mcg on the bottle.)
I take 3/4 to 1 level tsp of MSM powder. It is bitter, so swallow it with something sweet.
I take one heaping tsp of lecithin. I purchase this in bulk by the pound. It costs me about $6.59 per pound, which is well over 100 doses.
High potency B12 is also good for your hair too.
I keep a spreadsheet on my hair shedding. I weigh how much I shed, and keep precise records, so I know which nutrients work and which don't. I keep environmental records too. Was it hot or cold for example. I factor in that 20% of shed hair is not recoverable to be weighed. I am probably the only person in the world that does this. I am certainly the only one at MLHH that does this.

I'd heard that glucosamine had been linked with hair loss. Is that true?

I have heard pros and cons on this. I started taking it sparingly again due to low back pain problems. My spine is compressed. I hope to help my spinal discs which have thinned. (I have lost 1.5 to 2 centimeters of height.)

I have been taking a product called maxi-hair from country life, its says its for nourishment for hair, nails, and skin, the only problem is that there gigantic gorilla pills, James
One point to bear in mind is that as your hair grows longer, more of the shed hairs will remain in your mane or on your clothes, rather than just blowing away. The added length will also make it seem like you're losing a lot more hair because of the extra volume and also because you're more likely to notice a six-inch hair than a half-inch hair. As a result, while your shed rate might not actually increase at all, you'll feel that it has because you're finding more hair in your brush, comb or shower drain.
On top of that, I think there is an element of seasonal shedding. I certainly noticed more hair than usual in my brush last month, but it seems to have settled down to its normal rate again.
