Does anyone know the importance of long hair in folk metal subculture? I've a feeling that it's something about traditions (rooting to one's roots, if you will) descending from the Gaelic and Gaulish peoples. I ponder this because some of the bands that I like (Eluveitie, for instance) have an all longhair lineup, and I wonder what the purpose and meaning behind this phenomenon is.

I'm pretty sure it has more to do with being "metal" than with being "folk," although there might be some unique personal significance regarding long hair within that particular subgenre.

i have looked into some things and the only thing i could find is that it was ether way: for the dead, because they couldn't shave there heads (so out of respect) or because it made you look thought and manly in those days.
