As I was leaving and exiting the building I overheard an elderly woman of about 90+ make the comment "he sure has a lot of hair" in which a elderly man , who was probably her friend replied "And overdue for a visit to the barber".
it was not spoken very loudly, but I have excellent hearing and could understand every word
my neighbor and myself were talking about this subject just the other day and he said before relocating to Florida he had longer hair.
now, my hair is not what many would consider really long. it's about the length Donny Osmond wore back in the 1970s and 1980s
but longer than the majority of Men who reside in the sunshine state. basically over the ears. not anywhere near shoulder length at all. it's a bit thick and can be unruly at times though.
when I informed my neighbor that I wanted to get out of Florida and relocate to a state that did not have many people who wre more tolerant towards Men with longer hair he stated that California was very long hair friendly and that I probably would not have a problem in Texas.
he indicated that they were more laid back in Texas than Florida.
afterall Willie Nelson has much longer hair than me!
Hey there, sorry people are giving you trouble in Florida. Sounds like your hair isn't even really long yet! People are crazy sometimes, unfortunately.
Anyway, I live in *rural* North Arkansas and haven't heard a single comment from a stranger yet (nothing negative anyway), with shoulder-length hair that's still steadily growing downwards. I have no doubt that some people have thought nasty things but so far no one has had the guts to say anything about it while I've been within earshot. I've met a few local longhairs even way out here in the Ozarks (mostly teenagers but also some older men), but there don't seem to be very many.
California you'd probably have no problem, there are a lot of longhairs there from what I hear. I've never been yet (though I will be spending a month in San Diego starting next month, yay!) but it sounds like a hair-friendly environment for the most part. Not sure about Texas, haven't really spent time there either. Really though, anywhere you go there will be people who will criticize you on occasion, nothing to do but make like a duck and let it slide off your back. Insults speak volumes more about the aggressor and their personal insecurities than they do about you or your hair.
Oh, and Willie Nelson whacked off most of his hair not too long ago. Pretty sad because he looked cool with it, but as long as he's happy then I'm happy for him, he did sport it for a few decades at least. Have a good one!
Most areas in the Southwest have no issues with long haired males. Might be the Native American influence or, it could be simply 'The Cowboy Way" which is basically an attitiude of "I don't care what you do, so long as ya don't scare the horses." Can't speak for everyone, mind you as no matter where you go there are neanderthal mindsets. I grew up in St. Louis, have many friends in Southern Missouri. Denizens of the Ozarks do seem to have little problem with long hair.(Unlike 40 years ago, When it was downright dangerous to be a long hair in some rural parts) Just keep your hair as you like it pay no mind to those who feel thay have to say something. it's borne of jealousy and insecurity, anyway.
Yes, I noticed that in Colorado too when I visited. people had long or short hair and no one seemed to mind how you wore your hair whether it was short or waist length.
unfortunately at that time I had a crew-cut(which I hated) and felt out of place there, but in Florida it was the common norm and unfortunately still is.
Floridians have lots of hangups and think every man should look a certain way meaning like he stepped out of 1941.
people here have often either implied I needed a haircut by making some stupid comment or would ask me directly when I was going to get one.
I've even had religious zealots start quoting some passage to the bible in the past.
I live in Cali, a lot of long hairs here and a common sight.
I work in a Conservative Aerospace Plant and there are many men with long hair, and no one cares...Love It...LOL
how's the local economy and cost of living there now?

Bad like everywhere else in the USA but we always seem to manage no matter where you live.
It depends on your education, experience and job skills.
It really boils down to your positive attitude and being assertive whilst being kind and gentle.
It is really silly that you are judged by your hair in certain parts of the USA but such is life.
My hair is only shoulder length and probably not long enough to even be posting on this site..
I actually hid my hair from a pony tail up under a hat today, i was in a situation where i didnt want fly my freak flag!!! LOL
