I like my long hair, but one habit I am having trouble breaking is when I am nervous about something I find that I unconciously chew on the ends of my hair, of course this is a terrible habit because it makes split ends and sometimes I get little hairs in my mouth
I keep trying to remind myself not to do it, but not much success lately if something has me stressed
any tips? I don't want to have to cut it short enough that it won't reach my mouth to solve the problem
Is your hair long enough to tie back? If so, that should keep it a little more out of range.

When I was a kid, a slap on my wrist with a wooden ruler by one of my school teachers, or as my mom used to do, a good old-fashioned spanking with her wooden spoon she used for cooking spaghetti... Ahhhh, the good old days (LOL)!!
Hey Ken,
I Was smacked so much with the wooden spoon it broke ! Mom then moved on to the BIG PLASTIC MIXING SPOON ! It didnt break LOL LOL
When we deserved a beating, we had to go out find our own stick with which my grandmother was to beat us with, if it wasn't up to her standards she would go get her own. and im fairly sane as an adult, go figure LOL
Hey James,
Thats like goin to did your own grave before they shoot ya routine.... lol

Everybody needs a good beating once in a while , i got them as a kid . it toughened me me up and made me meaner but i learned my lesson also. James /Tampa,Fl
He might be a bit big for Mama and her wooden spoon. Then again, some dominatrix's make good money role-playing Momma or Aunty and the wicked wooden spoon.
My piano teacher (Catholic nun) rapped your knuckles with a ruler if you missed a note. If you played perfect, you got a candy bar. I had a love/hate relationship with the metronome...
Three suggestions:
1. Make yourself chew up and swallow any hair you bite off. (The rub your nose in it solution.)
2. When you get the urge, bite off your fingernails instead. (The direct the urge elsewhere solution.)
3. Replace your conditioner with tabasco sauce. (The electroshock solution.)
4. Smoke lots of dope. Then you will never get stressed. Just be careful not to shed in all the cookies you will be baking. (The groovy solution.)

Some of those replies were really funny! But seriously, there are specific behavior modification techniques just for things such as nail-biting and hair twirling, and you can do them by yourself - not go to a behavior therapist. Try looking it up on the internet, start with 'behavior modification' and then get more specific from there. It might take a bit of searching. Good luck, you can do it!!
I used to chew my fingernails obsessively so I know how that goes! I finally quit about a year or two ago and started clipping them with nail clippers (first time they'd touched my hands in over a decade, my chewing had kept them so short). Not sure how I stopped though, sorry. I didn't even realize I had until all of a sudden they were looking long and then I was like "Wait, they aren't chewed up this time, why not?". Haven't put tooth to nail yet since then. I was gone from home for awhile, and that's when I noticed them growing longer. Maybe you just need to shake up your routine a little, and also try and reduce stress of course.
Some people _swear_ by the rubber band on the wrist technique of behavior modification. Every time you get the urge to chew your hair, pull the rubber band out from the inside of the wrist, then let it go with a loud "snap". The sting will momentarily make you forget all about what you were going to do. Can't say it will work for you, but some people have had success with this method.
