Hi guys,
Today I went to an interview for a New York City Govt job. Now since Ive been out of work for 6 months now with this the first real interview Ive had, I wanted to look good. So Yesterday I went to my trusted stylest. But before I went, I kept goin over in my head that I got 2 kids a wife and cant pay my bills..... you gotta look PROFESSIONAL... i HAVE TO CUT MY HAIR TO LOOK PART RIGHT . So since its been HOT I put my hair in a pony tail before goin to the stylest. When I got there she said " Ready for your trim " I said " maybe I should cut it off so I can get the job" ( Throwin the 2 week rule rite out ) She wouldnt cut it since " it looks fine as it is" she said. She changed my mind by reflecting how at 17 months of growth now it all( almost all ) gets tied back into a ponytail. PHEWWW ... THAT WAS CLOSE !
Now you guys will probably laugh but.... the job is a sewage or potable water treatment worker... but its a city job and they're hard to get
Here are some pics of me in my monkey suit ( dislike wearin a tie man )

Phew, close call, I totally understand your thoughts, I would have done the same, and maybe I wouldn't have had the strength that you had, especially when it comes to family. Congratulations, I really hope you get the job, you looked really smart.
cheers Dave
Hi Dave,
Thanks Dave, I can use all the encourgement nowadays, depressing being out of work so long. Surprisingly since ive been goin to school for last 6 mnths for my waste water license you do need to be " smart " in the math and science of it !
Thanks
Steve
With your hair tied up this way it looks very professional so no need to worry. Glad you didn't cut it off :)
Vincent,
Thanks man, I think that it looked professiol also
Steve
Good thing you didnt cut it. Im having a similar problem I just turned 18 and im looking for a job, but im going through the "awkward" phase(this is my 7th month), and I have curly hair so it doesnt looks its best right now lol. Im kinda worried that ill be asked to get a hair cut before I start a job, I dont think ill be able to cut it Id rather be jobless, at least until my hair is long enough to get into a ponytail. Well good look on your new job and on your hair progress
I have about 9 months of growth and although they pressured me slightly to get it cut there was never a big deal at work. I work at a Chipotle as a manager and my awkward phase was just that awkward. I took it in stride and made it a good phase for them to remember. When it was too short in the back to do a single ponytail, I had two little baby tails like a little 4 y/o girl LOL. Now that it is long enough to do one ponytail in the back I do that, however, the top is too short to reach the back ponytail. So what do I do to keep it under the hat? I simply do two up top on each side towards the back, so now I have three mini ponytails, two under the hat and one out the back. When it is time to clean or for me to go into the back office to do the paperwork after shift, I take off the hat and everyone loves it LOL. Here's proof ;p. Kind of hard to see the one coming straight at the camera but here you go, I am going to live out my awkward days in a blaze of glory.
Ziggy
hahah i dont think i could rock that look, with the three tails. Id rather wait it out till I could do the whole ponytail, for now I'll just slick it back when i need to look good. thanks for the advice tho, and good luck on your hair journey.
Awesome, Ziggy! Give them something to remember and smile about!! :)
Hi Ziggy,
Good for u man , workin in a manager job and being yourself ! I too do the double ponytail to get the shortiez from my bangs, I thinks it looks fine.
Glinka
Good for you ziggy! I work in the restaurant industry too and my hair needs to be in a tail--thankfully my hair is almost one length with the exception of the front hairs still--however I get bored wearing my hair in the same fashion all the time. Therefore, I'm started to experiment with different styles. I've recently been doing two ponytails in the back and unite them together with a braid...Nobody mentions anything to me so I just sport my own look and if any negative comments should arise I usually can comeback with a witty comment...But, when I'm done with my shift I cannot wait to undue my hair and just let it loose...And, frankly, I get head-aches from keeping my hair tied up all the time.
Alex,
when i was in akward phase and working, I used lots of " firm control " gel to push it down to look like the other drones. Hey if you can afford to be jobless, do it. Maybe an of the books job?
Good luck on jog search

Glad you didn't mate...what is it with employers over there! Do for the job interview first and see abou the dress code. The job can't be worth if you have to haircut first!
Cheers,
John.B
Hi John,
Yes Mate ( I love that Enlish twang man ) Seems that in a construction managerial or public utulity setting they all want the short conservative look , unless ur a female then its ok. At this point in my finances any job will be worth it .
Cheerio Mate

Hi Glinka, I have to say you look very professional in that pic and wouldn't you know it you still have long hair:)Your stylist is awesome for the favor she did for you by giving you the thumbs up on your current hair. That's got to be a rarity as she basically lost revenue by not cutting your hair short at that time.Certainly I hope you land that job.Cheers
Mark
Hey Mark,
I too thought it was proffesional looking. Yes, she is an awsome styiest, I gueass thats why she gets all my family to receive her services. Shes there to make her clients happy ( feel like one of those solon women when we get to talkin ) Hope I get the job too! Had stiff compition --- somthin like 30 to 40 guys besides me.

Steve
I wouldn't even know you had long hair looking at the front view.
Good Luck! I hope you get the job!
electros,
Thanks man, My thought as well. Prayin I get it also !
Thanks Glinka
Glinka,
Thank goodness for your stylist giving you good advice!! I am glad you did not have to cut your hair, and sincerely hope you get the job. Yes, city jobs are hard to get, and usually come with good benefits. One thing that disturbs me is your saying, "you guys will probably laugh" at the water treatment job. Granted, it may not be your dream occupation, but it is a very important job that provides a much needed service to many, many people. You would be working an honest job, not doing something illegal or hurtful to make money; that, and the fact that you are willing to give up your hair for the good of your family, shows that you are a man of character. A good man working an honest job should NEVER put himself or his job down! Besides, how many jobs are *more important* than providing clean water???!
Agreed! People who look down their noses at those who do good honest work have it backwards. Sorry if you've had to deal with that in the past Glinka, but just remember to laugh it off. Being rich or working an executive job doesn't necessarily make someone happy or a good member of society.
Personally, I'm unemployed right now but my current 'dream' is to drive big rigs some day. Some would call that strange (and I may have when I was a little younger, but outlooks change), but hey, it provides a valuable service, I wouldn't have to do anything that compromises my personal ethics, and I'd get to see the entire country while devoting almost all of my income to savings (no kids and wouldn't need to pay for a home while on the road). It's all perspective... and college, academia, and white-collar life are not for everyone (certainly not for me, though I wouldn't consider myself stupid, it's just not a fit for me). My mother earned a master's degree in marketing and all it brought her was massive debt (which she still owes on, and probably always will). She never once applied her degree to a career, just wasn't what she was meant for I guess. Everyone has a different calling and as long as someone is genuinely happy with themselves and their life and isn't hurting people along the way or perpetually living on welfare (if out of laziness), they are very successful indeed (in my eyes).
Hi Anther Schmoe,
Your dream about being a Trucker, whats holing you back ? I just came across a trucking Co. that pays for your CDL A training in the local newspaper. Dont know where you hail from but this CRST Co. is out in Iowa and will bus you out there to get trained. Its not for me since my kids are still young and that Im try for somethin local. If you interested let me know and I can get you the info. Sorry to hear ur moms not using wat she went to school for but like you said, everone has a different calling.
Dont get me started on the Welfare thing, I know Im collectin unemployment but Ive paid into it for the last 20 years.
Unfortunatly I live next to the highest percentage of Liars and Cheats in the WHOLE COUNTRY ! THE HASSIDUM !
Cheers

Hi Laura, ( thats my cuz's name )
Thanks a bunch !! . Yes , Its good to have trust in those with the SCISSORS . Im prayin I get that city job .
Thanks for the words of confidence in regards to my line of work. When I got started in wastewater 4 years ago I always use to say to my mentor" how do you get use to the smell " . His reply was " I dont know about you, but it smells like $ MONEY $ TO ME ! Thats because you can charge a good fee t do this kind of work. I dont necessarly thinks down on what i do , but most people do, so thank you for how you understand that if it were not for people like me the most precious resource we have on this earth is our good an delicios H2O !!! And thank you for the workin a honest job and not illegal or hurtful, Ive been there already with jobs i did for shady kind of peole.
Theres a sayin in the wastewater industry , " Your S**t is our Bread and Butter ! "
Thanks for your words of encouragement
Glinka
I agree with you Laura! No one should feel ashamed about making an honest living!!
Hey Glinka,
I'm glad you didn't cut it off! I went through the same thing and almost cut it off! And remind you that I was looking for waiter/bartender job.(How stupid and regretful would I have felt if I had cut my hair off for a job like this)Keep up the search and you will find something...I finally found something and now grew some facial hair at work and they don't say jack...I feel great about my own identity and learned that people are going to criticize your look no matter what...I went to see the movie X-men last night and it was awesome! Because all the mutants wanted to fit in and the realization of fitting in is to "Not Fit in at all...So people can call me a long hair freak or whatever---and I will simply just say "Thank you"
Good-luck with the search man! Looking good!
