Hair loss prevention article on Web M.D.
Hi Val,
That's a facsinating article and thank you for posting. I think it's well worth a read for anyone having problems.
Cheers. Iam
Notice in the article how the people advocating biotin use are the ones who sell it. Hmm.
Naturally, the virtues of a product or service will be hailed by the persons selling it. In this case, and in my own experience, the claims regarding the benefits of biotin are valid. Also note that biotin's effectiveness is widely purported by many other people who do not profit by its sale, and that it can be obtained not only from nutritional supplements, but from natural food sources, as well.

Just performed an extensive search of published medical literature to see what level of evidence exists for all the anecdotal claims made about biotin. Across thousands of peer-reviewed journals, both national and international, there are zero published studies demonstrating biotin to increase hair growth (in speed or quality) in healthy people who do not have a rare biotin deficiency.
I think I'll buy some stock in biotin supplement manufacturers.
When I am supplementing with biotin (2 milligrams daily), I experience an increased rate of hair growth (between 5/8-inch and 3/4-inch per month, versus approximately 1/2-inch per month when not supplementing). That's good enough for me.

I am using a product called maxi-hair made by country life.its high biotin with other stuff, it helps ,but my hair grows fast by its self. the supplement in combination, that with the weekly coconut oil treatment and eating better does make a difference, i also keep my hair either braided or in a tight tail almost 100% of the time to protect it. take care James / Tampa,Fl
I suppose the conclusion has to be - if it works for you - fantastic, if it doesn't - don't but it any more! Ian
That's good news if it speeds up your hair growth. It is always interesting how different people's hair responds in different ways to the same vitamins.
I have been a regular user of Biotin on most days of the week for the last 24 months or so. I haven't noticed any changes in hair growth but I can say truthfully from observation that in 40 months of growing hair I still don't shed very much hair at all in the shower when shampooing and the hair ends haven' t taped off noticeably yet. Also the uniform growth rate of 1/2 inch a month that i grow is the same as before Biotin and hasn't slowed down yet. That is another side effort of Biotin is that it encourages longer hair life and less shed hairs. Even if Biotin doesn't speed hair growth in some people the overall benefits to hair is very well worth it and it is very inexpensive too!

Hi Duncan,
That's been my experience using Biotin as I don't notice faster hair growth but the decrease in shed hairs is amazing. Before I used Biotin I had what would be considered normal shedding but at certain times of the year my shedding would pick up noticeably to the point I was worried about losing too much hair. Now my shedding is way down and I haven't experienced the uptick in shedding during those same periods like in the past.So I feel its cheap insurance and will continue to use it:)Cheers

Val-
Absolutely RIGHT! I've been taking Biotin, Saw Palmetto, and MSM and my shedding has stopped almost completely. The shower drain has less hair and I think it looks fuller or my hair has started to take shape...But, I've also have noticed that my skin and nails are actually better-My nails are also growing like crazy too...However, I'm not planning on growing my nails any time soon lol...
