Do you think society in general will ever accept Men with longer hair the same way that they do with women with longer hair?
it seems that many of the issues such as employment and prejudices that many Men with longer hair faced over four decades ago have not gone completely away.
No, the problems have not gone away, but they have become a little easier over the years as it has for many of the minority groups. In fact, there was a case in the UK last week of a boy banned from school because of his hairstyle, but he won his case for discrimination in the court. If you want long hair, that's your choice and possible problems along the way should not discourage you. Stand up for your right to choose. Good luck, Ian
Probably not although it is getting easier as time goes on.
I agree with both UK and IanB. Just to add too, There just some people who have their mindset on a specific direction and won't change it unfortunately. In otherwords, your not going to please everyone on this planet. You do what you want to do and not worry about it.
Best way to go about it is just keep on walking :)
I was thinking how strong the prejudice is when it comes to many types of jobs, any kind of position of authority seems like it is impossible to get accepted with long hair. Managerial positions in most mainstream type businesses that require a suit and tie are also pretty prejudiced, although depending on the company not entirely impossible.
It seems like everyone here expects to experience discrimination. That pretty much guarantees that you will. I haven't had a single anti-hair incident since my mother in the 1970s.
Having been aware of longer than average hair for over 50 years, I think there has been some progress, more in some areas than others, but there is still a long way to go.
I don't know if it will ever go away but we have made a lot of progress in that time. I wanted long hair as long ago as I can remember but it was not possible until the pioneers of the 60's started clearing a path. I've had long hair since and it is unimaginable that I could have had the lengths and styles I have had before that time. It would have been impossible. I think as our generation has kids who have kids, etc., it will become mainstream. The same could be said for tattoos and earrings on guys. We are still pioneers...
