I have been growing out my hair for about 8 months now. The longest parts of it are about 6.5 - 7 inches. When I get out of the shower, or put some leave in conditioner in it it looks great. But if I have no product, and it's dry then it just poofs out like crazy.
Should I expect that to be the way my hair will be when it's double this length??? I don't want to have to put stuff in my hair all the time when it is longer, but it's definitely a ball of poof now. I know I'm still in the awkward stage, but I thought at this length it would start to lay down a LITTLE more than it is right now. Or am I asking for too much at this length??
As your hair gets longer, it should lay down more. It's own weight will help give it some more control.
I'm in the growing out phase myself, 16 months here. I've also changed up my routine alittle to help with this as my hair gets longer. Hope this helps.
You're in the throes of the awkward stage just now. However, it does get better, and as your hair grows longer it will settle down. You'll always have a lot of volume and us folks with nearly straight hair will be jealous of you because of that.
Bear with it and enjoy your hair.
As a someone with hair that is both thick and naturally frizzy the weight of the hair will eventually settle down. Wearing a hat on a windy day helps along with oiling can help keep it tidy until the day that you can do a ponytail. After 18 months or 10 inches of hair it should be easier to restrain.

It would be easier to answer this question if you provided a picture to see the type of hair you have. But, it usually does get more "controlled" as it gets longer. It might take longer if you have really curly hair cause it takes a while to get past the shoulders, and thats when it starts getting weight and it "lays" down.
