Back in my long hair days, instead of tying my hair back with a simple rubber band, I would occasionally use a plain barrette. This got some interesting looks, but it had the advantage of spreading out my hair some, and frankly, I didn't mind the looks from some.
It seems as though I do not see many men opting for barrettes, although ponytails seem to be popular.
Any other men wear barrettes out there??
I've never worn a barrette, but actualy there is a piece of hair jewelry made for men. It's called the "Ponyring". It's a "covering" for the elastic hair-tie. Handmade of sterling silver. Way Cool.
Hi Ward,
I'm curious about this hair jewelry you mention. Where can one buy a Ponyring?
I've looked in a couple beauty supply stores, and haven't found anything like what you have discribed.
Check out the URL below. I have about 10 of the ponyrings, and I wear one most days. People are always asking me where I got them.
Hi Stephen,
Thanks for the info, but what was that URL again?
Sorry, it didn't come through. It is http://www.2chicks.com/index.html
Ward Amparan is the owner of this business. He invented the pony ring as a jewelry item that is appropriate for men. I have been in contact with him as a possible sponsor of a long hair contest for men. I think this would be wonderful. I'm also getting contacts for other possible sponsors. If you have comments about the contest, please make them on the contest thread above. In the mean time, please check out his site. Not only are there pony rings but other hair jewelry as well.
Thanks, everyone, for the info on the Ponyring.
I have visited the Ponyring site, and look forward to recieving my new
hair jewellery.
Cheers,
Geoff
It sound like the ponyring is something that I recently found. I went to an Indian Pow-Wow at Long Beach State about a month ago. One of the reasons that I went, was that I had been looking for something nice for my ponytail, and everything I was finding was too feminine. Since many Indians, both male and female, have ponytails, I figured the Pow-Wow would be a great place to look for something.
I looked everywhere, I couldn't find anything, so I started to ask the vendors if they had anything. One vendor had something that she thought was supposed to be for ponytails, but didn't know how to use it. We finally figured that you were supposed to tie back the ponytail, and the clip the silver cover to the tie. It looks great, but I discovered that the clip wouldn't stay on when I went dancing.
I also ended up finding another vendor who had a leather doodad. It is a flat piece of leather about 2 1/2" x 1", with three pairs of hooks, and two leather straps attached. You put the ponytail onto the leather, and then loop the leather straps over the hooks, kind of like shoe laces. It looks nice, but is difficult to do all by myself.
I occasionally wear a similar leather thong like deal like this...a piece of leather about 4 inches long with holes at the ends that you use a wood pin to close. Fits around my ponytail nicely. I have one with a nice hand tooled design that isn't feminine at all. My girlfriend has one for her hair she wears occasionally. She will braid her hair and flip the braid up and off of her neck with in a "stack" looking bun. She would love to do my hair like that, but I don't have the nerve to try that in public quite yet.
Charles,
Let your girlfriend braid your hair for you and try it out. I've found that it not only feels very pleasant to have someone braid your hair, but it looks great and others who respond at all find it attractive. I was self-conscious at first, too, but like most things this passes with repetition. Give it a try and let us know how it worked out.
Please post a picture if you have one. If not scanned, sent it to me, and I'll scan it.
I would be interested in knowing how to purchase the leather straps which these two gentlemen you were talking about. I have a friend who has been trying to find a leather pony tail holder. His hairdresser suggested it to him and suggested something similar to what Adrian Paul wore on an episode of Highlander. I have looked everywhere on the web for something like this without any luck. I even contacted the Highlander catalog and they didn't have it either and the wardrobe deparment is on hiatus until mid-July. These two items sound very much like what I've been looking for. In particular, the one with the wood pin. I would really appreciate any information either of you can provide me. Thanks a bunch!
Patty
I found my leather hairtie at an Indian Pow-Wow at Long Beach State College here in California. From what I could tell, there is a pow-wow in the Sothern California almost every month, and there are 3-4 big ones every year. There were 2-3 vendors there, but it took a very concentrated search to find what I was looking for.
BTW: At one of the official Highlander webpages, there are hairties being sold, but they are not leather. They do have, however, some very nice Celtic designs on them, and I've been thinking about getting a couple of them. It is *SO* hard to find something that I like for tying back my ponytail.
