I have been on here for sometime. Am going to start growing my hair out. When you guys started did you have a length in mind? Do any of you want to achieve waistlength just curious.
RICK000
Hi Rick000,
Well, waist length would be fantastic but I'm appreciating any healthy growth - and so far, so good!
Best wishes, Ian
Ian, that's a good attitude to have with hair. Healthy good hair first, and anything longer is just a bonus!

As a kid, in the 70's, I wanted long hair but my folks said, "No!" After I graduated I became a stage actor and long hair did not fit the parts I was playing at the time. So I grew a beard instead. Then 6 years ago I was hired as a background actor on DEADWOOD. I signed a contract stating I would not shave or cut my hair. After the first season, the union actors were let go (we cost too much). I was about to get a haircut when the phone rang and I was hired to do a role in a film. The director wanted me to grow my hair out longer. Most shoots last a couple of months so I said yes. Turns out this shoot lasted 4 years and my hair continued to grow. Durring this period I found this site and saw pictures of members with amazing knee length and longer hair. With the help and eouragement of this site I have grown determined to let my hair and beard grow to terminal length.
Good for you on deciding to grow your hair! My hair is a bit passed shoulder length and have been growing my hair for almost 4 years-and started from a crew-cut...In the 90's I had let my hair grow to almost waist-length and then gradually began to cut it until it was a crew-cut. (A move I regret tremendously)My main advice is patience...Don't give in to hair-cuts while it's growing out. Stay true to your decision of having long hair...I'm not sure if I want it to waist-length but I will be happy with mid-back length...Good-luck on the grow-out!
What was the shoot that lasted 4 years? Was it a TV series or movie of trilogic proportions like Harry Potter?
It was a small indy film called "Dynomite Swine". They kept having problems with raising the money. We would shoot a weekend here and there as the funds trickled in. The film did the festival rounds but was not picked up by a distributer. It had no names or stars which made it a tough sell.
Well, I have waist length hair currently.
Well, as of yesterday it was halfway down my butt, but I opted for a trim.
All I can say is that it is a lot of work.
Even though my hair is waist length now, compared to it being longer, it is such a change. Feels lighter and somewhat more manageable.
Perhaps I had split ends that were ruining everything :/
But anyway, if you can deal with spending about a half hour each morning, brushing it, then go for it.
I may decide to go shorter though before going longer again.
Except it's true what they say, once your hair gets very long, it is so difficult to just snip that much growth.
I'm just starting, but... sure I want waist length... or even longer... as long as possible ;-)

Sure it would be nice to see hair grow to the waist. However when first growing out my hair just over 3 years ago, mid-back was my goal. now it's longer and getting to lower back area my present goal is waist length which if the current growth continues should be there by July 2012. One goal milestone at a time to avoid huge disappointment is my hair creed motto!
Hi Rick,
I wanted butt length hair but am afraid it's not happening (should be my biggest problem now). Don't get me wrong, I love my hair regardless.

I had no length in mind when I started. It actually stopped right around waist length, which suits me fine.
Technically, my hair is waist length, but most people wouldn't recognise it as such, because:-
1) Only a few hairs in the middle are that long;
2) It only reaches my natural waist, whereas most people think waist is only when it reaches your belt, even though that is not anatomically correct; and
3) It has a slight wave in it and only reaches that far when I pull it out straight.
At this point it doesn't want to grow any longer. My target was to get it down to my tailbone, but that isn't likely to happen. Saves on haircuts, though. I've stopped having any trims atall. I haven't been to a barber for years.
I hear ya on what appears to be terminal length for me also at around waist length and I too have saved a bundle not getting any haircuts since the summer of 2005:)Cheers
Mark
I had my last trim in June/July 2005, and since then, I've probably saved about £1,000 (roughly $1,500) on haircuts at the barber's. I don't think I'm spending any more on shampoo/conditioner as although I use more each time, I wash my hair less frequently, so not only does long hair look good, it makes economic sense too.
Already there, and then some. My hair currently reaches about an inch below my butt after just over six years' growth.
My initial goal was mid-back, because that's as long as I'd grown it in my younger days, but when it got there, I decided to go for terminal. I'm not there yet, so who knows, one of these days, I may reach knee length.
I tend to wear my hair in a braid or bun to protect it, only letting it loose on special occasions, and I sometimes feel I'm missing out on some of the enjoyment of it as a result, but I don't think it would have reached its current length if I wore it loose all the time. In terms of manageability, I've had no real problems with it. I brush it morning and evening, which takes a couple of minutes and then it goes back into the braid. I'm sure if I wore it loose all the time, that would take a LOT longer, and I'd have more trouble with split ends.
Yes I do.
I had it and even alot more at one time. (Butt length.) It was wonderful! And it was actually easy to care for! :-)

im at 26 months and its about just below shoulder blades, im going for belly button length. James/Tampa.Fl
I have had belt length hair in the past. I am finding that I like mid back length better. My hair would probably grow to my knees, but I don't want it to get that long.

Nope!! I think my optimum length is just past the nipples, waist length would be an absolute pain in the arse. Long hair rocks though, and I love to see others with that length.
Cheers Dave
I'm with Dave. As much as I think really long hair looks good on others, in my own situation I can't see having hair much longer than shoulder blade/nipple length. And at my age with my baby fine hair I probably have a short terminal length anyways.

I have a question if your nipple rings hang down over an inch, is optimum length from the nipple itself or the bottom of the rings. just kidding.LOL James/Tampa,Fl
I guess when I started growing my hair I didn't really have any length in mind. I just wanted to look like all my rockin' guitar heroes! I wouldn't say I WANT waist length hair, but if my hair managed to get there (which I doubt it will) and I hadn't gotten mad with it already, then I guess I'd give it a try and see how it went.
I'm quite happy with my hair the way it is though.
Take care,
Neil.

My original goal was maybe mid back. Then I wanted waist length. The longer it got the more I liked it. My mane is currently twice waist length. (Your true waist is the exact same height as your navel, not at the beltline.)
Scott
Impressive! Is this terminal length for you?

I think that is about it. I am 58, and lucky to grow this long. I wish I had done this in my 20s. It probably would have grown longer.
